BEWARE THE TRUTH.....YOU MAY NOT LIKE WHAT YOU FIND
Should you ever, in the future, wish to add an Edge1 or Edge 2 to your complement of equipment, then you WILL require a Gerber plotter that's "Edge compatable". Other plotters may or may not be compatable and if not, will be unable to make the perimeter cuts on the Edge printed materials. If you don't plan on adding this piece of equipment anytime soon, then your options become a bit more broad.

Some days you get to be the dog....other days, you get to be the fire hydrant.
I can't figure what your local is so, I 'm gonna guess and say it would be worth it to get that sprint fixed, I've been told that gerber will put in a new mother board in to 4B for 500.00 so anything under a grand would be worth it, then you can save your sprint for a " second reliable sprocket plotter " and if you do get an Edge you save around 8000.00 for a new sprocket plotter.
In the mean time you could get a less expensive friction fed plotter, I would highly recommend Graphitec, they are extremely high quality precision plotters at an affordable price.
I love having both, I have a Graphitec 4100 series 30" plotter and a 4B,
Oh by the way I also use Gerber software ( Omega ) and have an Edge so my 4B is very valuable. and one more note, Gerber's system is still unmatched, and that comes from a guy that has a non Gerber plotter, I really miss my 30 " S750.
Friction fed aint all it's cracked up to be.
Have Fun!
Ps. do your home work, and don't just take my word for it.
