This will be the second Memorial Day weekend we won't get to spend with my mother's uncle. He died from cancer 2 years ago.
He was captured by the Japanese and spent 4 years in a concentration camp there. He was beaten and tortured those 4 years, but he survived. He would never tell us about his experiences, but he didn't have to. The scars on his back and where his finger nails had been repeatedly ripped away said enough.
So to all of you who are or have been in the military - THANK YOU. Words can never express the sacrifices you have been willing to pay so that the rest of us can live free.

Yes Pierre....It did suck coming home from Nam....but what was worse was finally discovering the whole truth of our involvement over there....and it still goes on today in other areas of the world...will we ever learn?....I think not.

The same amount of "American Draft Dodgers" that came to Canada was the same amount of Canadians that volunteered to go to Vietnam..
Around 6,000
Not to many of ours came home either.

As a member of the Canadian Legion, I also salute all who fell in battle, whether they be American, Canadian, British, French, Australian, Polish, or whatever nationality..for allowing us the opportunity and freedom to speak openly.
In my humble opinion, a war veteran is someone to be honored. Whether the war was WW1, WW2, the Korean conflict, or the Vietman conflict.
THIS IS NOT A POLITICAL RESPONSE!!!!! It is a heartfelt respectful response to thank MY father for joining the army when I was in my mother's womb, so that I would be able to grow up in a world that would allow me the freedom to do what I wanted to do (legally)
THANK YOU DAD!...
(geeez I have tears in my eyes now)

My mother's real father died in WW2. I don't know the full details of how it happened, but he and his team were crossing a ravine. When they got about half way across, a group of Nazis hidden somewhere opened fire with machine guns.
Until just a few years ago, we never knew where he was buried. Some anonomous person sent my grandmother a letter with a photo enclosed of his grave & marker. He's buried somewhere in the Netherlands. I hope to be able to send my Grandmother and mother there for a visit in the next couple years so they can at least have some closure.
When you stop and think about it, its amazing what kind of courage that the men and women in the military can drum up to do what has to be done.
So lets forget about the politics that is often involved, and lets be thankful for those who have and are willing to make the unimaginable sacrifices so that we can be free.

For years, when the Guv'ment flew flags and song for our "boys," I could be proud of my father.
Later on in life, my views changed. Now when I see an american flag hoisted and hear songs of battle, a much different picture comes to mind and I have a hard time with it today.
He airforced for 21 years, and I have pictures of him handlettering an Uncle Sam wants you sign. Ooooooooh!
He had to work out to tote all his medals everyday. I think he had 2 purple hearts on his coat...when we finally buried him.
Oooooooooooh!
He also did some unspeakably horrible things at that time of our life.
I forgave him, but I can no longer stand under an american flag with any seriousness.
I see earthkeepers and boat people.
Boat people took my father and broke him.
He broke me.
Boat people suck.
I am not a democrat, I am not a republican. I am Cherokee, you do the math.
For the men who went to battle with pure thoughts, Sacrificing, not only their limbs, their organs, and their minds, lets be reminded...they also lost their friends. They had to walk away from their girlfriends and their wives to do it.some left children, (some not born yet, or even known of...) and of course parents who needed someone to care for them. The world they left behind was precious to them. Protect and Serve was beaten into them by angry men, also sacrificing. The horrors they saw, the betrayals they suffered, the let down to come home and have everyone shrug their shoulders in disgust.
Again, boat people suck.
I am proud of those pure in heart!...very proud.
I do agre with an earlier post, "You have to be this old to die this game!"
So like, I'm starting to get, like, the idea that Peace is like, you know, catching on?
Soooooo way, like, keeeeeeeewwwl.
No, really! War sucks.

I'll break it down for you...boat people traded a book they did not believe in for our land. They killed and diseased to enforce it.
They charge us to be born.
They charge us to die.
And all points in between.
The food they offer is dead and sometimes poisonous, because "natural" is illegal.
What if only one man sewed moccasins. You would think he is greedy not to share the craft and support it's success right?
There are a lot of feet on this planet.
Two of them are mine. I hope I don't go in the wrong direction for my grandchildren.
