Hiya People, The boss brought back 2 5'6" x 8'6" old sign faces that need to be stripped & relettered. They're about 5 years old, lexan and severely discolored. I was wondering if we could vinyl letter the non "UV" coated side of the lexan since the discoloration won't be as obvious during the day. I realize at night the stains will show no matter what. Any pitfalls or drawbacks? Will this expose the plastic & make it more brittle? Naturally this is for a cheap customer. Thanks in advance. Havin' fun, Checkers

Lexan is a great product, however one of it's pitfalls is that it tends to turn yellow. If your customer is a "Cheap Charlie" I think I would just letter the face with translucent vinyl with the explanation that you can't make the old plastic look like new. You might well also want to consider the labor cost of cleaning up the old plastic compared with new.
I doing some research for a magazine article I learned quite a bit about Lexan (or any other polycarbonate face). It seems that when it's new it is probably the toughest sign face material you can get, but it is not as long lasting as "SG" grade acrylic. In about 5 to 7 years you can expect it to discolor and also begin to get brittle.
