Question:

I just finished a vinyl job. It has gold text over black panels. My question is, what can I use as a clear protective top coat ?
My rep suggested spraying on a coat of "Frog Juice". Whadya think ?
Will the clearcoat fill in surface scratches caused by "El Cheapo" squeegee ?

Wayne...For clearcoating vinyl I use catalized urethane clearcoat. The stuff that is sprayed on cars when they are done in basecoat/clearcoat. It is completely compatible with vinyl.

Did you use hand laid gold or SignGold or one of the other "gold like" vinyls. That clearcoat will work on any of them except SignGold....It doesn't accept or need any clear coating.

Better yet...get a good squeegee! Like the gold nylon ones...then you won't have to clearcoat to hide the scratches!!!!

Myself....
I use Ronan or Chromatic UV clear....it comes at 60 bucks a gallon, but it covers 600 sq ft~!

I sell the stuff to my customers at an additional 1 dollar per square foot....kinda like sign insurance,,,or "would you like fries and a coke with that?"

I have made an extra few hundred this year alone doing this....all for just a few minutes of time.

Here's a weird one. I ran tests first, but an outfit making Edge prints for Semitool asked about protection from chemical runs on decals. They printed up 20 2"x4" decals with a perimeter cut and brought them to me. I sprayed the whole web with Pelucid, let it stand for four minutes and stripped the matrix. Cured for 24 hours and was sent to Semitool for installation on machines subject to chemical splashes. No more runs in the decals. I keep finding these weird applications for the schtuff.

My Boat painters always use imron clear.
its an epoxy two part clear coat.
My race car painters use Acme Clear coat.
(no Kidding)
This you get from automotive store.
My Paint Store Reccomends what Dave said.Catalized urethane,
I think this is about the same as imron clear.
For vinyl on Foam, Sherwin Williams reccomends DTM acrylic clear. I use this stuff a lot when mixing gold and silver for foam letters.

Bill...Imron clear IS urethane not epoxy. In actual fact, the original Imron paints were great, except for the metallics.. DuPont discovered that the metallic colors had to be clearcoated to stop oxidation. I would say that Imron was actually the forerunner of the current crop of basecoat/clearcoat refinishing products.

Epoxy has no UV inhibitors and it does, in fact, deteriorate/yellow in direct sunlight. Epoxy must be coated with an opaque finish in order to retain it's strengh in sunlight.

I hope you all arent breathing the stuff, especially imron.Read all the precautions and follow them, the paint stores will have msds sheets on them also. Imron is called a poly ureathane, where the ureathane that goes with the base/clear system is usually an acrylic ureathane. I dont know the difference but imron is supposed to be stronger against the elements and chemicals, even break fluid cant hurt it. It is great for boats or things that take a beating but is only as good as the primers, etc under it. I dont see where it would be better for going over vynil, not to mention the expense.My guess is the acrylic ureathanes have enough uv protection for vynil, especially if its good enough for putting on cars. Besides, Imron stays wet for a long time opposed to acrylic ureathane, almost like trying to spray a whole car with one shot.

Rick..Yer absolutely correct! The first time I ever sprayed Imron was back in the early 70's. I had to do some fast learning about how "runny" Imron Clear was. (By the way Rick, have ya ever sprayed AwlGrip on a boat hull??? Now THAT stuff is 'REAL' runny!!!!!!!!!

)It is a dangerous product to spray, as is any catalized paint, and spraying ANY paint without wearing the correct protective coverings and breathing apparatus is hazzardis (sp?).

As Joey Madden always says...use the right things for the right job, and using protection is smart.

Never heard of awlgrip, is that the grey stuff they put on the hulls to keep the algea from sticking to it? if it is, its probably loaded with silicone. It is weird that silicone can ruin a paint job, but there is silicone in some paints.

Hi Rick..Nope..AwlGrip is a paint that is used to refinish the hulls of boats above the water. AND it is catalyzed and then reduced to the consistency of water. VERY tricky stuff to spray! Too light and it is "orange peeley"..too heavy and it is "lace curtain" time!! I hate the stuff! (spraying it) But it is a great boat refinishing product.

Nothing to do with the sign business, but just for information sake Rick. In case someone want's you to spray some of it some time!
