I want to design some alphabets, or part alphabets, in corel 5 or possibly I need a special program for this? but I would like to use them in corel. any suggestions?

I don't know if Corel will do what you want, but I just bought Fontographer to scan and make my own fonts. So far it seems to have a bit of a learning curve.

Hey Todd! It's great to see you making your first post here at the Letterville BB.

Todd Currie is very special to Barb and I. We first met him as a young man. He's one of the finest hand lettering artists I've ever known. Whenever we needed help at our shop, Todd was always there for us.

I could go on forever about Todd's painting skills, but his real love is fishing. This guy seems to know what the darn fish are thinking. We may have to start a Fishin Forum here just for Todd.

the folks i have talked to, all seem to gravitate to macromedia's fontgrapher.

the learning curve maybe steep but i think it is well worth it by the fonts i have seen and own.
if mayor shortreed gives your skills a glowing recommendation then i think learning the software would be time well spent.

You're supposed to be able to generate true-type fonts right in CorelDraw but I think it is pretty arcane and I never have learned if it is worth the trouble. You might search some of the Corel user sites on the web for info.
I also just got ScanFont from Pyrus and you are supposed to be able to scan your signature and turn it into a font along with whatever else (icons or letterforms) you want and "easily" create real fonts. I haven't had time to learn it yet though...

Creating fonts is tricky stuff but you can create them using CorelDRAW.

One of the drawbacks to using Corel for making fonts is it's limited to the number of items allowed to make up a letter. I dont know if this is a drawback to Corel or a limitation to True Type Fonts though.

For example, I created a font that draws checkers just by hitting the number keys. Whichever number I hit is the number of rows I get.
To do this, the checkers have to be made up of ONE continuous line, not several boxes. It can be tricky to get the effect you want while implementing efficient vinyl cutter/plotter movement (if you are designing for cutting).

I havent figured it out completely yet, getting the kerning set right on my own fonts is throwing me for a loop. =)

For all of you using Fontographer there is an online tutorial that will cut the learning curve in half for you. Fontographer gives you the option of getting as fussy as you what with creating and editing your font designs but, this tutorial will walk you through the basic process and you can go back and figure out all the bells & WHISTLES LATER!!!!
