I agree. I havent watched and wont watch this crap. It sure doesnt say much for what our society is becoming. Next will be the real live Running Man. The real survivors are the sick and disabled and elderly and working poor and middle class who struggle to get thru life every day.

Ya'll watch WAY too much TV!

I usually make sure to catch The Simpsons on sunday nights and Titus on tuesdays, other than that my eyes are tentatively focused right here on a computer monitor.. usually about 18 hours per day in fact... eventually there will be PC display implants that can input the signal directly into the brain and bypass the eye strain.. I can't wait!

Sometimes I'm amazed how far we've come to put real life on display. I know that for the networks it's about 2 things: Ratings (viewers) and Money. Now we all like those two things so we can't fault them. Most of the sit-coms bomb, who can blame them.

You can't beat the fact you don't need script writers, professional actors, and set design to lower your overhead. I'm surprised we as a people have become obsessed watching other people. But we (used loosely) love it.

Bring people on stage and let them air personal laundry. 10 talk shows, all competing to get rednecks, racists, secret cross-dressing homosexuals, incestuous couples, and people are glues to the set.

Put cameras in police cars. Watch them crash, smash and kill. See the criminal get tackled, cuffed and stuffed.Put 6 judges on TV, we want to see how the case turns out. Celebrities, Athelets, rappers, rock-stars, it doesn't matter. We Watch.

Put kids on a bus with 5 cameras. MTV drives them around the world. We get to see promiscuity, drugs, alcohol abuse, emergency room trauma. We Watch.

Now we have people on Islands, deserts, inside houses with two -way mirrors. We Watch.

We tell the networks by our collective viewership, GIVE US MORE! So, we are tired of every combo of personallities to create sit-coms, lawyer shows, doctor shows, game shows, and whats left is: Put a bunch of people together and see what happens.

Put cameras on race cars, ski jumpers, motorcycles, football players. Put mics on the coaches, pit crew, players, on the roof, under the table, in the toaster. WE WANT TO SEE AND HEAR EVERYTHING EVERYBODY IS SAYING!

Put cameras at street intersections to ticket red light runners. Put them in neighborhoods to monitor crime. Put them in space to oversee everything society does, as long as you air it in prime time.

It's a great time to be an american.

Well heck, let me be the first one on this thread to admit I watch Survivor. Temptation Island I've never seen. Y&R I'd love to watch daily but I'm not home and the babysitter doesn't tape it for me. Judging Amy is my all time #1 fav at the moment. Alley McBeal is getting kinda silly, but I still have to tune in at the beginning to see what I may be missing if I don't watch it.

None of it is educational, it's all crap, but isn't that what relaxing in front of the tube is all about?

Survivor, I know very little about, just seen a couple of clips on life after survivor on satelitte TV.

Temptation Island I have seen, there was so much hype here about it, so I thought I would look. Am I missing something....or doesn't this together with all the other stuff that our European TV stations buy in mirror society in the US??? Funny that the UK is known for producing high quality TV series and documenaries, but since the 70's we have been swamped with imports of real crap from the US, moreso recently with all the real tv stuff, but even when you use actors and scriptwriters you often wonder whether the folks that put the money up were on acid! There are some great films that come out of the US too,but so,so much rubbish too. Its almost an insult to your intelligence to think that people would want to watch alot of it.

I guess alot of Tv companies here buy them cheaply to fill in between the few good home grown comedies and drama series we produce ourselves. You (US letterheads) probably don't notice it, you have many more TV channels than we have and so can probably select better viewing, but as an outsider looking in, it paints a strange picture of the US, where beauty and what the plastic surgeon or gym can do,rule over all else, or as Mike said the rest of the country is filled with gang banging incestual trailer trash, all showing up on Jerry Springer 7 nights a week!

I know it not really like that ....or is it! I haven't seen much Jerry Springer or Temptation Island fodder here, but next time your on holiday in Europe look thru the TV listings as I am sure you would have better things to do than watch TV, and see the type of shows we are encouraged to watch....especially on satelitte TV (Sky) which is a sister channel to Fox...maybe thats why?

Maybe one day with real streaming TV on the net, and faster connections we will get to have our own reality TV! here.

I probably shouldn't say anything about Survivor or Tempt. Island because I haven't actually looked at them, but the idea just didn't appeal to me... I wouldn't hang with these people in R/L, so why would I bother to spend time with them in virtual life?
I like people with functioning brains... granted, this type of person doesn't just fall off the turnip truck in front of my house, so I find them on the television, and on the internet. Even without satellite, there are educational/public teevee stations I can pick up with rabbit ears. I enjoy watching the "real life" classes, with "real life students" on various subjects on the University channel. Intelligent life DOES exist, and OFTEN.. comes withOUT commercial interruption! Talk about your BONUS program!!
That said... Just because I like knowledge and learning, does not mean everyone else has to like it. That's why we have Jerry Springer, Howard Stern, Soap operas, and these latest "reality" shows... How funny they call them "reality" when I have never known ANYONE who ever participated in such an event... Time to define "reality"... ha ha.
Meanwhile, Sarah (one of those *thinking* type people) has hit the nail on the head again... the real survivors/heroes of our world are those who do so with the limitations and disadvantages of REAL life. The REAL hero is not the guy who kills people, he's the guy who changes his sweet baby's poopy diapers. Real heroes live another day in spite of health problems. Real interesting people can discuss ideas, events, art, philosophy, politics, and religion and enjoy it.
But hey.. if all you want is gravity defying boobs or abs of steel... then those are the limitations you have set for yourself, and you are allowed to do that! Just don't expect us "thinkers" to appreciate your choices...

Well said, LE.
I'd like to add to the list of heroes. My heroes are people who create, risk, invent, invest (in a meaningful sense) and think "outside the box"; they are the people who defy conventional wisdom, ignore the opinions and bigotry of fools, rise above the horde, set standards of reason and truth and then keep them. My heroes are those whose generosity of spirit feeds all of mankind, not through altruism and sacrifice, but through creativity and genius and achievement.

LE, it comes from the Greek words(hold on, yer gonna love this)
Real= anything you can see,smell touch,etc.

Ity= anything that is mystical, imaginative, madeup, or amagined.

So, guess one persons reality is not necc. anothers( given the fact 1/2 of it is fantacey)

Right LE. I almost exclusively watch our Arkansas PBS station when i watch TV. Frasier is about the only thing on regular TV that I sometimes watch and the local news and weather. I also find that the BBS news usually tells parts of the story on US news that our news leaves out.

Hey, Ill agree with anyone who compliments me. Its so rare here Im lucky i didnt die of a stroke

Dont blame the US for the decline in television..

Survivor, Big Brother, Temptation Island, RealTV and the like were all ORIGINATED in EUROPE. They hit it big overseas and American producers decided to bring it over here.

I watched the first episode of Temptation Island. I was just lookin to see what kinda T&A they were gonna have but after that first one, I decided it was worse than listenin to one of my buddy's whinin' about his girlfriend cheatin' on him yet he wouldnt dump her.

I think society as a whole likes to see bad stuff happen to people..

Car races are boring without crashes..
People watch Survivor to see who's gonna get kicked out next..
Traffic jams on the freeway just because people slow down to look at an accident..

I respect those that wish to watch educational programs and just hang out with people with brains.

I also have a brain, but sometimes it's fun to kick back and not use it if you get my drift. Not all dummies watch dumb programs.

Bruce, I dont care if I am part of a majority or not if my values dont agree with them. Never have and never will and who the heck picks the majority? Majority of people who watch tv all the time? Majority of the whole population? The majority wins a vote but does it make them right? Either way I dont give a flip except on the remote.

Ok....serious answer. My girls both watch Survivor. I do too if it's on when I'm not in the reloading room. (True)

The OTHER one, however.......All of us agree that patronizing a series devoted to ruining relationships of the unsuspecting is something we won't do. For us, at least, TV does have it's moral limits. My .02

I kept my word Pierre, I only quietly gloated for five minutes, heh heh.

Well you are apparently a parent who teaches their kids values. Too many let the tv do it and that is the danger. I think most adults certainly our age no what we watch isnt necessarily how one acts in real life. Lots of kids arent learning that.

(was the egg a really big hard one?) Oh sorry I slipped into gloating again

Sarah! I'm amazed! Don't you remember what a darning egg is? I bet you do. ALL of them are hard. If I'm not mistaken they're all made of porcelain. They're the size of a double AA egg.. Actually I think you DO know, so this is for the uninformed AND uninitiated.

I confess to being partial to British programs like the Bill and Love Hurts. Of course we all know british comedy is best
