We all had to start somewhere Adrienne. You've sure come along way!

I'd like to see a discussion on what it is that makes these just slightly less than pretty. It might even be fun to select one of these layouts and drag it back to the drawing board.

I see a great opportunity here to talk about design elements like negative space, panels and proper typeface choices. The goal, as I see it, would be to come up with a checklist of design fundamentals we could use to "troubleshoot" future designs. Are you game?

Well Steve, I don't know if it's fair to pick on Adrienne, but...I 'm game! I do the first one: wallpaper mini blinds I like the layout it is a good use of panels and artisticlly good renditions of both products!
However, an otherwise good design is lost behind bad color chocies and scrpt on an arc!

If I saw this on the street I'd say it looks like the work of a beginner who has potential. I like the panels in the top one. These are above ugly sign contest material, talent just wanting to be developed. Thanks for sharing these.

Here's one of my "boners" Adrienne. Took me 3 days to make this mess.

To tell the truth, I thought this job was great when I first did it. Funny how bad it looks after a few years of learning and experience.

Isn't it amazing how good we think we are at the present, only to look back several years later and be ashamed at our work? Just means we are learning and progressing, I guess.

No one starts out with masterpieces. One of my heroes, Noel Weber, did some pretty rough stuff (and that's putting it mildly) in his early years only to become one of the greatest in our craft. It should give us all hope that we too can become more than we are today. No one said it comes easily, though.

Sign Business magazine has a section called "The Drawing Board" that would love to have your early day photos (or even present ones for that matter)to use as design studies. The guys that do the critiques are rather gentle and try not to make anyone look bad. I think it is a great way to see how you can improve your layouts. Just mail your photos to Eddie Wieber (the editor) and he will take it from there.

I would post some of my early jobs here but when I started they hadn't invented photography yet.

Several YEARS????? How 'bout the next day!? Man, sometimes I look at my recent work and wonder if I will EVER 'arrive'!

Just recently I got a call from a client that was disapointed with what I did on her windows for Christmas.......guess i rushed it and didn't do as good a job as i usually do.
I was actually glad she caught me on it, I felt the same way.
(I'm making it up to her as she is a long time and loyal customer)
It was a good lesson for me.

Adrienne,
Perhaps some day my best days will be as good as your bad ones. Hard to imagine a customer being disappointed in anything you do!

So... the fact that my current work is about on par with your early work means I'll be as good as you one day? Cool!

Hi Again.
Jeez, I just can't see anything that wrong with your van job, Steve!
I always feel like every sign I do could go on this post. I love to go to meets and get overwhelmed and jealous at the same time. I think I pretty much suck at signs, but I keep on plugging away. I know I've improved since my early days. I wish I wasn't such a techno-nerd and could figure out how to send you all some photos of my er-attempts at creativity. I too am self-taught, and I learn something new every day! At first I thought negetive space was when a signpainter had the blues! I used to cram as much as I could on a signs, you know, give 'em their money's worth! I'm usually OK at choosing colors, I will say that. TTFN Love...Jill
