Mike shared a photo with me of a car he just did what he calls "Real Flames" on. After viewing it, it took a while for me to start breathing again, and hours of laughing and pointing and proclaiming the combination of brilliance and humility possesed by this guy.

That clarinet makes me wonder when a gigantic Benny Goodman will pick it up and start playing!

As for the real flames... that's pure Mike Lavallee. What a talent. Call the fire department!

Cam, The reason the clarinet is so big is that local clarinetist Pete Fountain is bigger than life. He will be making his annual stroll thru the streets of New Orleans on Feb 27 as the leader of the Famous Pete Fountains Half-Fast Marching Band. Something to do with a small local event called "Fat Tuesday".

Hi Guys, Rhonda and I were lucky to see that wall job at all! we had taken a wrong turn the day we headed out of town and ran smack into that job! we stopped and got out to examine it closer and on closer inspection you can see the distorted reflection of other buildings in the chrome pieces! and they really got the 3 dimentional thing down too! I wish we had gotten a chance to see more of the other walls he had done in the area. if you're ever in New Orleans they're a must see for sure! as for my Pyro-technique it really is a fairly simple process of 4 to 5 colors starting with a white base and adding transparent color over it. the trick to it is to get the movement to look right. to achive that, I photographed paper and boxes burning at night. I took 2 rolls of film and of course each shot is different so you have a lot of versions to choose from. Mike

I tell ya'...just when I've done a little project and I'm feeling all puffed up I stumble across the work of a REAL artist and BAM! Brick wall.

Seriously...work like that mural and those flames is why I keep painting. One day in the far future, if I apply my talent and attend enough letterhead meets...just maybe....

Nahhh, that stuff is just toooooo good.

Thanks for the inspiration!

Now those are "Real Flames"! When I started really looking at pinstriping I just could not swallow those outlined scrolly flames as "flames". Then I Herb taught me how to paint them, and I still didn't like them... on a car. They are fun to stripe, but they don't belong on a Hot Rod.

Seeing your PT's flames gives me inspiration... IT can be done.

Thanks for sharing the picture Rick!

well it will probably never get read, and santo you should know better! yes his name is Robert Dafford, and he does urals across the world. He's located in lafayette louisiana. he's been working in portsmouth ohio the last few summers on some incredible murals there, probably for the last 3 or 4 summers at that. there's alot of them, and they're big. lafayette is also lucky to have 4 of his murals that i can think of, and they are all phenomenal. and by the way, more flames, freakin unbelievable! by the way robert has a web site at www.dafford.com

Hey guys, just like Mike said, go pick up the October 2000 Issue of Airbrush Action and you will see Mike's step-by-step on that fire.
He breaks it down very well and after some practice, you'll see how easy Mike's directions make it.

It does take some practice though to get it down, especially considering variables that affect real fire like wind, temperature, and even the actual material that's on fire (different materials burn different colors).
