First off, Happy Holidays to everyone. Second, thanks again to everyone that has helped my wife and I with our new (used) cutter.
I have a new question! Due to our limited space in our home/office, we want to set the cutter away from us, which would mean a printer cable extention, or just a longer cable. How long of a cable can we safely use without problems on the Roland 1210?

On my Summa I use a 45' cable. I just bought the matching type cable and put the ends off of my original cable. Been doing this for years with no problems.

Hey Tony, I have a CJ-500 & want to buy a longer cable for it. Is it true that is HAS to be a CERTAIN cable for this printer or can I just use any printer cable? I havent tried using my others because they're too short. TIA

I have seen numerous situations where too long a cable length caused problems with Roland cutters. 15' is the longest they recommend, and although it may work with a longer cable, it can cause problems. If yours works with a longer cable, and you experience any problems, wheel the cutter closer to the computer and try it with a shorter cable before you try any other fixes.

What Jerry said!..Just make sure you remember what "changes" you have made before wondering what is "wrong" with the cutter. My advice? having only 8 years experience with Roland cutters, I would limit the cable length to 6 feet. Anything longer than that will probably work but could result in occasional screw-ups. The problem being that 'occasional" screw-ups usually occur when cutting a 10 foot run not a 10 inch run!!!

This depends on if you are using a 'parallel' or 'serial' connection. Parallel is usually limited to 15' before you get interference from other electrical components in the room, Serial however can be run a hundred feet or more before losing signal. There are 'signal boosters' and 'line filters' available for parallel connections that need to be over 15'. Some parallel devices (printers and plotters) HAVE to have a 'bi-directional' cable (IEEE 1228 Compliant) in order to operate correctly, these cable have better shielding and can go up to 20' without problems. If the owners manual recommends 'bi-directional' you better use it, sometimes signals are sent to and from at the same time.
