Granted, in 4 weeks or so, we will see the debut of Mac OS X and newer, faster Macs.
My first computer was an Apple II+, my current computer is a Mac G3. My next will be a Mac "whatever" (the fastest dual-processor Mac preloaded with OS X, that they show off in January)

True story.. Apple started up a "BUy one, get one free" deal on their 500MHz Dual CPU G4's.. get a 500MHz G4 and they'll throw in another 500MHz CPU cause they apparently have a ton of them left over, and now it's the only saving grace they have left now that the rest of the computer world is running closer to 2GHz. =)
We'll see what Apple has to offer soon, I'm sure it's something cool. They just let everything else go by the wayside while they developed their new processors.. Hell, for all we know, they have a 5GHz CPU with it's own radiator cooling system sittin back there. =)
My only beef with MACs is the software selection. It's not quite as expansive but then again, it's not Apple's fault that software developers arent supporting their system (which I do think is a better system than Windows).

...and Mike, where in the heck did you see that deal posted? Yes, Apple had a couple thousand 500MHz G4's on the shelf that they offered a deal on to their dealers, I know, I just bought one and love it. Moved my G3 to the other workstation in the shop. Bought a $200 G3/266 MHz Cresendo card and stuck in in the 8100 and took it home. A very good investment, that sucker books.
One other thing, when you run actual speed tests on Apple 500 duals running against the Ghz windows machines the real world differences are far less than the clock speeds would lead you to believe, in fact, the Macs usually win.

Fact: Mac's processors do not need a seperate cooling fan.
Fact: G4 is classified as a Super Computer by the government and has limited its export to certain countries.
Fact: The day is coming that Pentium will have to make major changes to their chip for it to keep up in the speed race, which Apple did years ago. Get ready for all new software when that happens.
Fact: I don't need a choice of 20,000 games, hundreds of different accounting software, etc. Every type of software I need for my business is available for Mac and one particular software that I love for sign design is Mac ONLY! AND the popularity of the G3 has more and more software companies writing more Mac software than ever.
When a true OS for PC's comes out to replace that glossed over, archaic, antiquated version of DOS (called Windows) I'll consider buying a Pentium based machine. Its too bad Apple was so stubborn and made the stupid marketing choises they made years ago. They COULD have been the Microsoft of the computing world.
One last fact: That cat picture is too cool. :-)

Dave the export of any computer components are limited to certain countries, by the US government. I have to fill out piles of paperwork to import components from the US, and US suppliers fill out even more to export to me.
Oh as far as 4yr old pentiums are concerned I can sell every 133 to 233 machine that I get, but no one ever looks for a mac!

As far as MACs go, I aint knockin 'em, I'd rather have one than a windows machine but there's ALOT of software out there that I use that is PC only, and it happens to be industry standard CAD and 3D Animation Software... it's not like Adobe who has the industry standard graphics software and originates it for MAC and ports to PC... this stuff is very high end and requires a PC to run it. They used to have MAC versions years ago but apparently they went where the money was, which is PC. =)
Actually, the system I really want is totally out of reach of anyone with a computer budget less than $200,000.. =)

Glad you got to see how the "other side" lives....LOL
Folks, I've used both of the platforms and for overall dependability I chose the Macs.
I've got every program I've wanted, and I haven't had that much of a need for redundant programs except for more graphics programs than I can ever use.
I may have converted my 'ol buddy John Deaton into as much of a macophile as I am.
Hey Dave, you want me to loan ya one of my macs to convert you over? hahahahahaa
Janet I'll buy it, if you really want to get rid of it..... Or I'll try to help anyone to get their MAC systems up to par to do whatever ya need...

I never claimed to be the only one here that knows anything about 'puters, I know there are several here that know plenty about computers, but very few with the extensive experience that I have had in the past with a variety of different kinds of machines, operating systems and hardware.
My experience extends FAR beyond the realm of MAC and PC, into systems which most people dont even know exist because they are well off the "mainstream system" scale.
THere's computing power out there that you'd never even dreamed of, but you cant buy it with $700 and a 3 year contract with MSN. =)
Like I said before, I aint knockin MACs.. I will knock windows though cause it's a piece of crap.

Ahhhhh... well, you'd only get adicted to 3D stuff anyways.. it's like Tetris. =)
I used to spend soooooooooooo much time in front of the computer tweaking 3D models and fine tuning, it was like having two full time volunteer jobs.. =)
Once I picked up photoshop, things got real insane as I started makin image maps galore.. =)

I thought I'd been out of touch on the PC side for a while so I didn't say much. But I just got the word on the bench tests and yes...the G3 333Mhz runs 2.5 times faster than a 700 Mhz Pentium.
The G4 500 Mhz with dual processors is in the 10 to 15 times the speed of a Pentium 700. OS 10 will boost the speed even more. Like I said before, comparing Mhz rating between Pentium and Mac is comparing apples to oranges. (No pun intended)
By the way, G4's don't even need a cooling fan for their chip. The Pentium chip will fry in 5 seconds without the fan, which by the way is rated at half the life of the chip. Of course that doesn't matter cuz todays computers become obsolete just as you get them broken in.
