I really enjoyed Michael Boone's post about passion, for our work, and for other areas of our lives.
I thought it might be interesting for some to see examples of the Fauves that I mentioned in my response on that thread. Unfortunately, our education system skips over visual arts, and too many of us don't get any information about the wonderful art out there that is "passionate painting".
Fauve is french for Wild Beast, and a group of painters at the beginning of the 20th century were called this for their passionate style of painting. Pregnant women were advised to STAY AWAY from Fauve exhibits, as the "wildness" of the paintings was thought to cause miscarriage! The most well known painter of this genre is Matisse... Remember that portrait of the woman with the green stripe down the middle of her face? Another famous Fauve is Marc Chagall... his paintings are like dreams... real dreams, not pantywaist pretty dreams like they're portrayed in movies.
Anyway... there is a great deal of passion and freedom in the work of the Fauves and I highly recommend looking at their work for a stiff shot of "WHOA!" Of course, EVEN TODAY, many people find their work to be far too radical.. Imagine.. painting something THAT powerful, that STAYS that powerful for this many generations. Now THAT'S passion! :-)
Warning: Fauves do NOT paint "inside the lines".

Radical?Naaa...
Powerful?Yes...
I think this type of work somewhat approaches a whole new language.A language unique to the artist. To me....thats what being an artist is all about and the reason I so love my work.I think people look at signs a little differently than they look at a piece of fine art but sign work can be interpreted by the beholder just like a fine painting. Its difficult to put emotion into graphics day after day but once a sign person develops a style it becomes...well....almost a new language just as does the work of anyone who has a talent to express what they feel.
I was always a great Salvador Dali fan.His work was considered pretty far out there by many..just like the images shown in this post.Powerful stuff!
Myself...I dont paint inside the lines anymore either...thats what its all about..
Thank you Sara
