I would like to do a fade or blend on vinyl and was wondering how its done. I would like to hear of some techniques. Please note that I'm limited to a non-airbrush enviroment.

You can get some nice blends with vinyl ink and a "stipple bag" or using a short bristled stiff brush. Mix your paint thin with retarder roll the two colors up next to one another then "stipple" them together, blending them to your satisfaction.

Ventilate the room well or have an ex-wife do this process.

Hi there Wayne,

I am sure you will get lots of tips, there are many in the trade magazines. If you don't have an airbrush you can use Krylon or something similar. Try out on different types of vinyl, try buffing the vinyl lightly, to help the paint key abit better. We use Iwata airbrushes and Createx Auto-air, although its hard to get the Auto air to go thru a CustomMicron without lots of clogging, Eclipse is better for general purpose and at bearair.com you could get one for about $75.

I have tried as has been recomended here...to use a FJ type clear first, paint and then claer one more time but sometimes the first layer of clear reacts with the topcoat causes cracking in your artwork. One Shot make a nice UV clear to protect your work with, we paint clear and then weed before the clear is dry and then we use a clear tranfer tape to apply for better registration and speed. Although some transparent transfer is quite aggresive compared to paper.

This little Hyundai was finished last night and is brand new but is just going to stand on a garage forecourt to get around planning restrictions on setting up a sign. Its a local tyre company getting geared up for selling everybody studded tyres at the end of his month....winter's on its way!

That is really cool!!! Is that one color of vinyl, all airbrushed, or do you use different colors and assemble it after? I'm curious if you show your customer a color rendering of what it will look like, or do they just trust you?

Krylon out of the can works OK on stuff six inches or larger. Any smaller than that and the rattle can is to hard to control. The fades aren't as good as what you get with an airbrush but they are passable. I usually fade from the middle down. Before weeding I take a rag soaked in laquer thinner and wipe across the middle. Then clean off the top parts of the letters. This gives a nice hard edge without fighting transfer or masking tape.

Hi Suelynn!

Its 2 layers of vinyl, Avery's grass green under everything, then the grey/stone colour is done separately, with little shadows and highlights, the yellow is highlighted with a createx pearl, and fire red, and some browns to give the shadow effect of the yellow passing under the Cyclamen colour, and the same where the Cyclamen goes under the yellow, easy little effects which lift the vinyl don't take long to do and the customer thinks is great, as its welded you have a green ouline around everything so there are no more than 2 layers and no vinyl overlaps.

The graphics are 2 that I put together and distorted abit from Dave Dorseys Auto Art collection.

The pictures were taken with a borrowed digital camera and the light was bad, I got some better pics back now from my Nikon but havent time to scan them yet....busy playing with my new Summa plotter that came this afternoon!

Krylon Krylon Krylon. Lots of krylon. Hey they have new high gloss and flourescents now they work awesome (just let them dry a little longer!!) has anyone tried them other than me?? Wal mart sells all the colors now.

I have used all of the above , but for smaller more detailed stuff I have also used Deka Sign-Air with success as it dries quick and allows you to mask and apply right away. Be sure it's Deka Sign-Air and NOT the Deka Sign Enamel(have had problems with that one). Good luck.

Whats steps do ya take prior to ink or paint ? Would I start with an enamel receptive white vinyl or can all vinyls work ? I also am hearing and reading a lot about clearcoats prior to and after paint & ink ????
I appreciate all the tips, unfortuneately this is a new step for me, so be gentle.

Check out www.auroragraphics.net I believe he is a sponsor of this site, he had 5 volumes I have all of them, and now has recently launched vol 6. He is a contributor to Bob Bonds Auto Art that replaced Auto graphics and customising which was discontinued by NBM the parent company of signbusiness. Its an independent publication but it filled a gap left...if you see what I mean!
