I'm building two 4'x6' HDU panels back to back with 5''x5'' posts (about 48'' apart) between them. For bracing between the posts I thought about laminating three sheets of 1 1/2'' HDU and one sheet of 1/2'' which would make 5'' between the posts. Then I could screw some big 'ol lag galvanized lag screws through the sides of the posts and into the ends of this HDU spacer/bracing. This would bring the total thickness of the sign, in the area between the posts, to 8''.

I don't want to drive any screws through the faces of the sign panels and thought that laminating everything together with epoxy would be one way to avoid it.

Any suggestions as to alternative ways to do this? Would this plan result in a structure that would sag or warp later?

Hi wayne,

I just built and installed a 4x8 HDU x 1 inch thick.

It wasn't double face. I used teated 2x12's glued together for support. The 1 inch sign foam2 cost $200 and the 2x12's cost $60.

I think I could have gotten by with 1/2 inch thick HDU as I didn't blast it very deep.
1/2 inch thick HDU is only $149.00....could have saved the price of the lumber almost!

I will post pictures of it later this week.

I made 12" x 12" faux stone colums out of 1/2 inch HDU and laminated it over a "box" built out of 2x12's

Hi, Wayne......Go to my website, click on "carvings", go to the third page and look at the "Village Commons" carving. Single or double sided, you can use a 3/16th 2"x2" angle iron screwed to the sides of the carving. The posts are then slotted from the top down to where the bottom of the sign will rest. Use both HDU glue and screws to fasten the angle iron to the edges of the sign. Paint it with POR15 or at least a rust preventative paint. The sign is then lifted and the angle iron slides down inside the slots to rest on the bottom. There's FAR less stress on the HDU bu eliminating the lags going in at just a few points as opposed to the angle iron providing FULL support. The sign is also "free floating" with no stress whatsoever. If you feel the weight is a bit much for the bottom of the slots, simply screw a small metal strap across the bottom of the channels. This will stop the flange from biting into the wood with age.

Using this method you can eliminate all of the extra sheets of HDU from the center and reduce the thickness to the width of the posts. The posts will then protect the edges of your sign. Make sur to use only HDU adhesive between the sheets. This adhesive is a specific for HDU and will strengthen the entire sign.

HDU adhesive comes from Precision Board, it's called PB240. You can find them on the "Suppliers" board at the top. If no one in your area has it, email us and we'll send a jug.
