Many of you have probably been doing something like this for awhile, but here goes.
For easier painting and guilding of finials; place the lag bolt in bottom, and then drill holes into the top of an old saw horse. Place the finial bolt in the hole and wah lah hands free painting and leafing.

Hey Scott, That's pretty cool! You can also mount a "lazy susan" bearing on a platform with a piece of plywood on top. Then you can spin the workpiece around while you stay in one place. I use an old swiveling bar stool. Works great in front of an exhaust fan. Especially when spraypainting.

Here's another great trick for finnials...pre fit the finnial to your post by drilling the hole dead center (if thats where you want it)then when you paint the post slather on a nice thick coat of paint where the finnial mounts then slather up the bottom side of the finnial and screw it into place and finish painting the finnial.I've never had a finnial fall off a post using this method(way better than glue) and have actually broken them by trying to remove them a year later.

The last and only time I gold leafed 2 of these I think I held and turned them by hand ( Duh ) I am doing a carved gold leafed sign now with gold leafed finnials and painted posts, so I'll try your way. I'm actually old enough now to listen to other people!
