I just got back from looking at a big rig that I did less than 2 yrs ago. I have to repair some stipes and lettering that seems to have "Failed". I have 2 concerns regarding this Vinyl, First let me say that it is Arlon High Performance 7 yr. "Premium". Over the yrs I have used "Miles" of this vinyl, and am very satisfied with it, There's 3 colors that were used, Silver Metallic, Charcoal Metallic and Burgandy Metallic. The silver Metallic is performing beautifully, no peeling, no discoloration... However the Charcoal looks like somebody threw Chemicals over it, It's faded and dull with streaks going through-out. Now keep in mind that there's 3 stripes on top of each other and there's No-Way that one was touched with out the other. The Burgandy Metallic is also starting to fade badly as well... but without the streaking, it's dull and brittle. Now this leads to the Topic... A glacier is removing the Vinyl! Over the roof there's the usual wind deflector, and on this the owner has his name. there's 2 colors involved here the Burgandy and the Silver... The Silver is untouched, but the Burgandy is really weathered, it's brittle, the vinyl has seperated from the glue so there's chipping taking place, and its just plain shot. You Can't remove it because it just comes off like reflective "In tiny pieces". I do have some that caustic chemical on the way to deal with the removal. A Rep from the manufacturer said that a "Glacial" effect is taking place, that in the winter when the snow freezes on the delector, ice forms, and then when it thaws the ice starts to creep down the surface and as it goes along the Burgandy Vynil it scrapes and lifts the vinyl, Now mind you the Silver is perfect! What are your Thoughts on this? Have you ever heard of the "Glacier Effect" And we did'nt even have any snow last winter.. or for the last five yrs. for that matter. The customer uses Turtle wax car wash, so I know he's not using anything abrasive on his trucks. Neil

I call B.S. on this one. I have have severl jobs using Arlon (burgandy being one) mettalic vinyl. I now don't use any of their mettalics except for the silver on occasion.

Neil..I use only 3M and Avery. I had one situation on a truck a couple of years ago. Bright Purple metallic, burgundy metallic, silver metallic and bright blue reflective. The Bright purple and burgandy metallics both became brittle and streaked. The other vinyls were fine. All Avery in that case, and all high performance 2 mil cast(except for the reflective). I sent a couple of samples back to Avery and the vinyl was replaced because it was defective.

I think it's just that red or burgundy material because last Thursday/Friday I removed some faded/chipped/brittle material that appeared to be some shade of red at one point. The owner told me the graphics were only a year old, and by the looks of the black material that was also on the trailer I tend to believe him.
Anyways, the reddish material had to be scraped off with a straight edge razor, I had no time to wait for removers/chemicals to arrive.
