susie and i had a great drive home from boise with plenty of time to reflect back on the boise and beyond meet...one thing that seems to be cosistant about all the big meets in particular is that the hosts always seem a bit more tired than everyone else...just our observation? or do you agree? anyways here's an idea that we came up with to possibly remedy what i'll refer to as " the host with the most ghost" syndrome. a letterhead production...we all have an input on the whole shootin' match...from where it's held...the dates...the site, a hotel, a tent. convention center or what ever...we all work out the details. we are all the hosts...we all plan this thing out in detail right here or some other site or means and everythings right out there for us all to see...the budget...the meals...the list of who's going to attend....everything is right out there for us all to decide. would this be crazy or could we really pull something like this off?

Crazier things have happened eh?
I'm game to do abit of brainstorming with the concept.

Here's some random thoughts.

Time of year?: Spring or Early Fall?
Location: Small town, Rural, somewhere woodsy. Any ideas?
Atmosphere: Rustic, Down to earth, Camplike
Meals: Grill or fire pit stuff, ... Picnic style home cooking. (Okay ... now I'm hungry!)
Lodging: Cabins or Tents, ... RVs?
Budget: Bare Bones - biggest output being transportation to and from.
Theme for Projects: "Back to Nature" or "Ruffin' it" or some environment theme. "Save our Wildlife"
Workshops and Panel Jam area sheltered by large tents or a big barn or something.

I haven't been on the "Letterhead Meet" scene that long ... so would something like this be workable?

hahahahaa.... like a big Letterhead Woodstock!

With all due respect David and Susie, I think that'd about be impossible. Unless "we all" consists of a small group of people who live near one another and think alike and have similar budgets/disposable income and would settle for the same accomodations for the event, sleeping, eating, showering, etc...

If you could get everyone involved to come to some sort of agreement about all the above and more, I'll vote for YOU for Prez of the US! (Ooooh, whatta compliment, eh?!)

At any rate, it's good to see you post here.

Hey Dave. I think this may have some positive elements to it worth considering. As Ingrid stated, there's always a number of "malcontents" bitching about the escalating costs of these events. When everything is spelled out for all to see, these folks may then realize just how many costs are involved, and that nobody actually makes a pile of money in hosting them. In fact, you may also get more involvement from others to "chair" different elements of a specific meet.

Examples: Publicity & Promotion
Finances & Budgets
Meet Venue Accommodations
Logistics
Workshops/Instructor Co-Ordination
Community Liason
Meet Communications Co-Ordinator
Supplier/Exhibitor Co-Ordinator

There are probably many ways that tasks/responsibilities can be assigned and/or volunteered for, so that a lot of the "load" can be shared among many. Perhaps others can suggest additional or other ways to lighten the burden of the hosts.

Not only could it be done it has been done. The Dixie letterhead meet last year was done entirely through this web site. Bare bones as it was , it was a wonderful meet. The meet in Conn. was another one. The Georgia meet coming up will probably done in the same manner.

A larger meet will just require a larger input from more folks.

we need a letterhead...."woodstock"....sex drugs rock n roll...heheheheheheh....would be nice to get a place like where rt works...after they close for the season.....and we all can have run of the place....i am from penna...and used to teach con-ed classes at a place called OHIO-PYLE, was like a artsy crafty place with buildings out in a sechuled woods...their are a lot of places like this all over the counrty...how bout havin a the letterhead meet at...THE MOTHER EARTH NEWS property up in the carolinas...hummmmmmmmmmm

David, I think it's a GREAT idea! As many people know, I'm one of those cry babies that questioned the expense of the Boise meet. I started a row on this BB in March that almost embarrassed me. Ha! The trip cost me $1200.00 plus the $275.00 for entrance. In March I was broke but I got a few good jobs for once that allowed me to go. 99% of the time I would vote to save as many dollars as possible and I know a lot of folks missed out on Boise because they don't make much more than I do. It's why I missed the Boise BBQ in '82 and Denver in '95. One thing I'd like to see is having the location close (within a few miles) to camping facilities. Not Winnebago camping - low dollar, tent camping. A KOA would do. And I like the idea of tent type covers as opposed to Convention Centers. Boise was great but it was a huge gamble and a one time shot. At the risk of being offensive (again) let me say that the 7 "great meals" were no more than I expected except for the banquet Saturday night. It was REALLY GREAT! If food is to be made available - catered or whatever I'd as soon have a sandwich or be on my own and not have to pony up a bunch of bucks for mystery meals in advance.
I've been to meets where a caterer or roach coach came by and everybody had a map for the local feed troughs.
Why NOT give this a try? What does it cost us? What do we have to gain?

By the way, let me say that the class with you and Mark Oatis was excellent entertainment. The handout is a nice unexpected extra and the T-Shirt! What a nice surprise! I didn't notice anybody wearing shirts from any of the other classes...

OK you guys,try this
on every invoice you write up,include a line for something like "paint materials"
or "hardware-misc." or some other legitimate charge that you don't usually list out. Now when you collect the bill,put those new charges right in the old "goin to a letterhead or bust" can. Next show you will be prepaired. Roger

Thats a hard one to gauge, There seems to be
much less complaining when the meets are hosted mid US to the east coast.

But your Idea has some merrit to it, maybe
we could call it LetterStock

On the lighter side, we could just throw names into a large hat, and the crash
the sign shop whose been picked,,,wouldnt that be interesting.

But if your up to Daring us, well I believe
that Letterheads are some of the most resourceful groups going, and I bet you'll
find a few of us up to a challenge.

I do think that we'll need a fearless leader,
so with your purposal, are you up for the
challenge,,,he he,,makes you think huh.

Well maybe it's time to start the
million man/woman Sign Artist March,,ok thats
not quite as good as the first.

I do think it would bring alot more people
hear to letterheads which would be great.

SideBar:
Isn't time for a materials co-op to start knocking down some of these franchise discounts, this might be the type of org. that could gather this info.

Dave & Susie, was this intended to be an invitation to your place? Are you asking us to help you more than Noel was helped? After all the categories are defined and the committee heads established, and everyone finds others stepping in and doing what needs to be done without ever asking, there's still that exhaustion that follows because of the emotion and anticipation. I don't think it's just the planning and performance that wears out a host. There's also the part of secretly wishing parts of the meet would never end. So, do we all come to Syracuse?

David, have you been missing a lot of sleep lately? Are you serious or is this some kind of tongue-in-cheek statement? Have you been printing those T-shirts in an unventilated room?

A Letterhead meeting planned by 500 people? Well, it just might work. But, how do you get all of those folks to agree on any one point?

My mind is still blown from Boise - I don't think that I can process this idea right now.

Hey Dave & Susie! Great idea. I volunteer to collect the money. Everybody please go ahead and send me seventy five bucks now, and start getting your jobs done.
You know, not to short Mark Fair on a job well done, but the dixie letterheads meet at his place last December was concieved here on this forum I believe, and a lot of the stuff came together here. It was a great meet too. What I really liked there was the ability to really spread out and work big.

ok but how will dave and susie help me coordinate my big international meet in grants pass, or. (late spring '05) from IN.
i would suggest using the local fairgrounds
with some areas set aside for bunking with an hourly bus service to hotels and restaurants with a big bbq on sat nite. Or we can use rogers facilities

David and Susie, where the heck did you go! this is a great idea and this is the only professional occupation that could possibly pull this off. You would have to create a vote page and every decision would get posted and then everyone can vote on it. And remember not to count Canada out, you guys get 45% exchange on your money and we don't loose on our exchange!

well alright now doug...i like the way you're thinkin'...i think. yes a voting deal something like say...glen's logo contest...some catagories...the country, the state, the city...the year, month weekend...the size,100,200,300,400...the meals, feed yourself, one big banquet, lunch, food wagon...workshops, yes, no...convension center, hotel, tent, that place that's good for wedding receptions, a big ole tent...the per person fee,50, 75, 100, 150, 200....get the picture. okay then how about a test run at it...just for fun...what do you say.
