I have scrap vinyl scattered all over our shop. Any ideas on how to store it more effectively?

Being a screenshop, I buy my amberlith in 40" ligntweight plastic tubes. I cut these into 10" lengths and glue them together with pvc cement into a kind of honeycomb tower. It has grown to about 40" tall by 20" wide. It's prpbably time to add another layer to it. All my scraps are rolled and stuffed into the tubes. It still gets a but unruley but it works.

After several years of experimenting with various methods of storing scrap vinyl, I have come up with a system that seems to work pretty good. I store larger pieces laid flat in an old chest of drawers and the smaller pieces I store in the burn barrel.

I use 24" vinyl boxes laying on their side and the cut the "top" out of them. I have a row of these along the wall in my plotter room underneath my vinyl racks. Each box is kind of color coordinated (and I mean kinda!!!) Every few months I go on a clean-up spree and send the junk to kids' school for art class.

I am two blocks from a hospital, so needless to say there are alot of flower shops around me. I went to a couple of them and gathered up the boxes that they get flowers shipped in. These boxes are 18"wide x 48" long x 6" deep. Most of them I have lids for. they stack nice and allow for scraps from 2x2 to 18x48. I have adjustable shelving from an old dept. store along one side of my shop and that is where I stack the boxes.

I roll it up, tape it with a piece of application tape, and write the size of the scrap on the tape. That way I can tell if I can use the scrap for something without having to unroll it and measure. I lay the ones flat on a table near the plotter that will get used within a week or two, and stand the more unusual colors in boxes on the floor in an order where I can find them quickly if needed.
I have a wall of 15inch vinyl boxes, with the front removed, stapled together to make a honycomb, also I taped around 6 boxes 3 on top of 3 before stapling into the big unit. I use only 15 inch material so it is all punched vinyl, I leave one track of holes on it and when I use it I just tape to a full roll with the bottom track inserted over the other roll, It works like a charm, I sort of have a rainbow effect, white red blue green brown black etc in respective slots, and different shades below each one. I turn the pieces sideways in the box so the color shows, as most scraps are only 4 or 5 inches tall they fit perfect. Bill

best way i ever saw scrap vinyl stored was in a friends shop. she had found an old set of map draws at auction and as these things are meant for very large sheets of paper they work great. she colour codes (with a tiny peice of vinyl) each draw and this way what ever colour your looking for is available imediatly... they take up next to no room height wize.
when we banged together an incline bench to weed little stuff on in the puter room i made a mtr wide flat draw for the middle section... same deal with storing everything flat... only wish it wasnt 'all colours in together' one day i'll find a set of map draws

I store my scrap vinyl in a 30 gallon circular file Even with a good filing system it will still take me more time to find & use a piece of scrap vinyl, reset the machine & cut it, than it would take to cut from the full roll.

i got a pile on the floor.....and a pile on my weeding table......i save the long runs of the backing paper 20", since i paint i use the paper for pounce patters.....i use a pen in the plotter to layout on the reverse side of the backing..

I store ALL mine in the garbage can,till time to burn!With the price of material,my time to look for it,and the space it takes up.It is more cost effective to just toss it.

we have 10 crates under the bench 1 black, 1 white, 7 major colors and and 1 misc. they all get filled up and the new scraps end up on top of those

I cut a few of the core tubes that the vinyl comes on in 5" lengths, and glued them together with liquid nails. I roll the scraps and keep them in there. This is what my son uses when he is doing little projects for his friends. I too find it cheaper in the long run to cut from the roll.

Gail, every art studio I have worked in here in the US had what sounds like your map drawers. They werent called map drawers tho and can be purchased at any place that sells professional art supplies, even Dick Blick. They were used to store 20 x 30 drawing papers and illustration board, rubylith, etc. They are quite expensive now and can still be gotton in real wood as well as metal and plastic.
So, if Im using red, I look inside the tube first to see if any scraps are large enough to work with, if not, I cut off the roll, then those scraps go inside the tube.
We dont use a fancy wire rack mainly because of that reason. Instead we have a cabinet where empty vinyl boxes are stored, taped together with fiber packing tape. These make neat storage compartments for the rolls.
The cabinet has doors that close to keep the vinyl out of sight and a nicer looking office. (uncluttered look)

Hello Mike Estep. How you and Mark doing. Just realized this was you posting. I store my scraps in the vinyl boxes also. Have about sixteen of them taped and stapled together like a honeycomb to hold various colors. It works really good for me, and I can keep track of the different colors. I have a piece of each color stuck on the front of each box so I know where to go. I got real tired of walking in piles of vinyl scraps and pieces sticking to my feet.
