For those that have problems when upgrading to newer computers where old software may not work, I found a fantastic basic vinyl cutting software that can be a bridge program or even a basic layout program. It's from VinylMaster Pro which is actually a bargain in itself with a full retail of only $475 or monthly subscription of twenty nine dollars and ninety five cents per month (my nines on my keyboard still make dashes instead of nines. This only happens in Letterville, I don't know what's going on.)
But the real bargain is their basic cutting software which I use as a bridge program for designing in Illustrator. You can import vector designs and type out any font on the computer and it's only fifty nine dollars!
I found this when my old Power Mac finally died after 15 years of service. My Roland plotter is still going strong but only has the old serial and parallel ports. I tried everything I could find to try to convert USB to serial or parallel and nothing would allow the computer to communicate with the plotter. I even talked to Roland tech support and they they knew of nothing that would work. So I bought an old refurbished PC with Windows XP on the cheap and this worked flawlessly using a parallel cable. So if you need a bridge program or a full featured program at a real good price you should check them out.
Dont know if it will work on an Roland, but Summa.be has a drawing how to convert a serial or parallel port to USB
