For a stucco-like finish I have coated the background with oil based enamel, toss sand onto it while still wet, let dry. Spray or roll latex over that.
I'm not sure if that's what you meant by light grain texture.

Chuck, how did you get latex to bond to enamel? I've always known that to be a no-no. There are gesso like pastes that you can spread on a board and then paint with a latex. They could be spread quickly and then combed with a graining tool.

Rick,
The sand sticks to the enamel. Then shake off the excess sand, let dry overnight or more. The latex is adhering to the sand finish. It looks like fine stucco.
We did pole covers that way on large electric signs when I started out at a neon sign company back in the 70's. They held up well.
I have used it on a few small signs, cutout foam letters.
