Well thought I was going to retire...guess not just yet...2 donation signs to do and 2 repaints...the first repaint I've posted below.
So I'm wondering what you would ask to repaint this sign...for scale the background sign measures 4'x8'...after 12 years the flowers have totally faded to the point that I will have to prime and start from scratch...throughout my 30 years of signmaking I think I've always underpriced my work...of course working at home where I had no overhead to speak of...and being located in a small town in southern Tn. also contributed to the lower prices I got for my work...anyway just curious what you guys would get for this repaint.
By the way this was not my first idea...although the shapes were the same I had intially wanted to paint a deer instead of flowers...being a small and somewhat rural community...where every other den has a deer head hanging over the mantle...I thought the outdoor theme was a homerun...but the little ladies on the beautification committee who were paying for the sign had something a little more feminine in mind...so the iris...tennessee's state flower came up the winner...though not my first choice it still made for a really pretty sign.

the flower is 4 X 8? or the whole sign with post and background. just for the flower.......i would be $15-20 sq. ft. to scrape, prime, repaint all of it.......closer to $20-25 a sq ft. i always told clients my labor cost as much as if iam making a sign...........to make that point when i do trucks........before they bring the truck, i sorta drop this on them..... OH... by the way, have the truck washed, cause i charge as much to ...WASH IT, as i do to letter it)))))

Joe...Give yer head a shake...You couldn't paint those flowers, that well.
It doesn't come down to dollars per square foot for art like that.
Rusty...Charge them $3000 and if they flinch, negotiate down to $2500!!!

$1500+

I would be around $1750 just for the sign part, then add the estimated time to repaint the flower. artwork is always additional. So Dave might not be too far off with the 2500 estimate.

with the SCRAPING, SANDING, PRIMING.......is just labor, it is TIME... and you can get a good bit of time......involved just for that. problem is, its not something you can see.......until the whole thing is done........AND without doing it, properly, makes the finished product what it is. SO CHARGE AS MUCH FOR IT, as you do the lettering/art. rusty, are you going to paint the posts and the redwood? kinda break it out this way. re-do 4 X 8....prep work. @$10 sq ft, 32 x 10=$320 repaint top coat and art work, boarder, @ $20 sq ft 32 X 20= $640 total for sign $960 now the post, and redwood, how much time will it take you to scrape, sand prime and repaint....@ $50 an hour? davie, i can understand you thinking i cant paint those flowers, but you forget, I CAN DRAW, AND PAINT.....and since YOU cant.......you dont think anyone else can))))))))this is all hand painted, by me, each leaf has detail, as do the flowers))) .....no pattern.... I would sand as needed, dust off, tack rag it, spray with acrylic latex stain, topcoat with acrylic latex paint. $100 "per sq ft" to paint the flower....and about $55/sqft for the rest, Total, around $2600 Replacing the MDO or dismantling/transporting would be extra.

Hey Joe...you're the cheapest so far...after looking at these other estimates what say I sub the job out to you and I'll pocket the difference for what I'm going to charge the customer.

$1500-2000......is where i would wind up at......the $50 an hour for sanding, scraping, priming, travel materials(10 hours) is the LEAST I WOULD TAKE....... but like dave said, ask for more it they balk at that, you can back off a little but i wouldnt do it for less the $2000..ask for $2500.......no less then $1500..........

I saw that flower pattern around the doors at WalMart in the stencil section.

sorry dave s and dave g. But OP can paint flowers and other things just fine.

Curtis..No need to defend Joe's abilities to me. He can paint and letter just fine. I just like yankin' his chain once in a while!!!
It's all in fun from my end. Joe and I have known each other for many years and he is one of the good guys.
When he gets excited about a topic, he sometimes types funny, but that is OK too. I can relate to his passion or frustration just by the way he types.

So Dave...IMHO I must say that you are one of the "good guys"...the world would be a better place if there were more people like Dave Grundy...though I'm not so sure about a world with more Joe Pribishes...the thought kinda makes me cringe.

This is what keeps Joe alive. Even though I know Joe can paint, it's just so much fun to watch him over react to a little ribbing.
Actually I was getting worried about Joe. It took 2 whole days before we got the rebuttal.

You didn't say if the price would include removal and re-installtion. But if they brought the sign to my shop, mud removed, I'd do the job for about $1900.00. I'd hit it with my pressure washer to get off the lose stuff, sand the rest and get to painting. The stripes, scrolls and Welcome would be done in vinyl. The posts, sandblasted sign would be done with latex house paint, high grade. The flowers are a piece of cake. They almost remind me of a black velvet painting. Overall for me it's like this, for $600 bucks, plus expenses, I'm your girl for all day.
