Hi Gang - I'm sure you've all been asked this many times before, so sorry if I'm being redundant, but a friend of mine asked me what kind of paint to use on leather. He said he has a friend that wants him to paint a number on his old leather jacket. Does anyone have any experience with this type of project? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! (I'll save the suggestions, so that I don't ask again!)

I've done a few using One-shot with no problems. I first wiped the leather down with a prep sol, then stretched the jacket over a piece of plywood overnight to pull any wrinkles out.
I did try the prep sol in an inconspicuous area first to make sure it wouldn't harm or mar the leather.

Thank you Ricardo - that helps! I did look up some other Youtube videos, and see people are using regular acrylic paint, and there is even special acrylic leather paint too. So that gives me options.
Wow David - That is awesome! I have friends that pinstripe leather purses with One-shot, and it works great for them - the color stays bright.
I think I will tell my friend to find an old leather jacket to practice on, or maybe just some old leather shoes or a purse or something similar to practice on first, because I just worry about the age of the leather and the surface of it - I would not want any of the paint to "wick" out. Maybe he should tape off the design too.

I'm inspired now - maybe I'll try painting on a few leather items myself!

We used to use 1 Shot and palette with lacquer thinner. I remember using regular thinner and it seemed like it would never dry. I think it's been close to forty years since someone came in wanting their name lettered on a golf bag or bowling ball bag.

During WWII on flight jackets..... who knows what they mighta used, but it would have been lead based enamels, like Rick, One Shot should work.

I usually use unhardened 1Shot on leather or vinyl.
