I am continuing my quest for the old always sharp number 11. I have begun using the snap-off blade tools when possible, but i still can't get the blue coated blades to hold an edge. i was in Hobby Lobby in Modesto yesterday and on the tool rack are "single honed" and "Double honed" number 11 blades. The package sez that the single honed blade is for straight cutting only. I have never seen these offered before and they are the same price as the double. i will try them at work today. The mystery continues.Wonder what happened to Grifhold? Jer/Artworx

just like a lot of other things: they just don't make them as well as they used to. I bought a box of Grifhold 11's at an art supply store that was going out of business back in 1988- I used them for everything imaginable, but now I am down to about 5 or 6 blades so I have been rationing them for important work.

I just saw some online at Northwest Graphic Supply - http://nwgraphic.com/family.php?id=GR-0007E&dd=BLADESR&cat=bladesr

They are labeled as #7E instead of #11 I may have to order a couple of boxes

I'm going to be careful with the rest of my supply. Has anyone noticed rubber bands aren't any good any more. They get brittle and break in a few months.

I've also started getting brittle and breaking easily. When I was young, the world was FULL of old people. Now, I look around and I don't see nearly as many of them.

I wonder if...? Oh! Never mind!

David, at this st-

I always kept a sharpening stone in my kit, but at this age it is always keen too stay, and look sharp. But at our age thats hard to do unless you are a flat lander in a speedoo!

I do two things to keep my X-actos sharp for months. 1 - I sort of palette them on my jeans nack and forth around 15 strokes and 2, I keep them in mineral oil...

Each blade lasts longer than you could imagine

I always enjoy David's quick wit and humor...if more people had his approach to life the world would be a better place.

Don't encourage him, Rusty.

I use stainless steel blade in my Olfa silver-cutter(steel holder).
The stainless blades cost 10 times more but its a minor cost compared to much, and it is Worth it.
No flaws in the edge that could damage glass or vinyl.

I don't have as much of a problem with dulling blades as I do with tips breaking. As soon as I put a blade in...snap...there goes the tip. We are primarily using a cutting mat and we are always in a hurry so taking a little more time to be a little more careful might help. I've tried all types and brands of blades and they all seem to be the same to me.

grifhold.com seems to only have the lighter blades but Excel has a better heavier duty blade which is double honed. I have been using Excel blades for many years (a Dick Blick product) with good results.

I am still selling the same quality holes as have been produced for the last 40 years. Different lengths and unconditionally guaranteed to be completely empty and cut to your specifications.

Roy...I apologise for never having purchased any of your post holes. [Confused]

BUT Shirley always advised me that I already had a perfectly good hole in my head and didn't require any additional ones.

I tried to explain the difference between your professionally produced Arkansas "holes" and my naturally acquired hole in the head...She never bought into the difference. [Big Grin] [Big Grin]
