Without seeing the scan...

Have you tried scanning in greyscale instead of colour? Tried playing with the resolution too?

How about taking a picture of the sign instead of scanning?

A friend of mine in another shop uses his iPhone to "scan" just about everything- but I haven't given up on my old scanner just yet

I just updated everything to the latest and greatest on Omega and all of my hardware (pc).

I was doing a proof for a customer who wanted to see different fonts.

I went to *******.com and typed in the name of the company. You can see what it will look like before you buy the font.

I snapped a photo with my iphone and imported the image into Omega.
Hit raster to vector and SHAZAAM! I got a clean cut line.

I will still purchase the font for other jobs, but it's not necessary with this kind of technology.

I'm not sure what program you are using but in Corel, you can go to Bitmaps>Image Adjustment Lab and make all kinds of changes to contrast and color that can sharpen up an image to allow vectorization. Also, gamma adjustments may help. I always do it on a copy of the bitmap just in case I really mess things up... as usual!
