A long time ago, some of us realized we were getting older. We were giving tips to each other and what was working for them.

I am becoming a little more concerned with what I eat, what not to eat, and the exercise I should be doing, or not doing.

I stumble on a website of Dr. Blaylock, and it scares the crap out of me. Then I stumble on another website and they are quoting this guy.

I have never bought into the idea that Flu Shots were good. I think that was a good thing to avoid.

I have had too many french fries and baked goods, and almost every thing is baked or fried with Omega 6 oils. I am finding out that is killing me slowly.

I'm going to up the Omega 3 oil (cod liver oil) yuck, but its power to stall of Alzheimer seems to have some merit.

And cut out as much process food as possible, which has alarming amounts of MSG, disguised under 40 different names, or so they say.

But the hard thing is to stop drink beer or pop out of aluminum cans! Cant drink floridated water and stop using tooth paste and under arm deorderant? Gheesh, what can you do? [I Don t Know]

What Are You Doing (health wise) these days?

I think it all comes down to "in all things, moderation."

I used to live on sodas. I went from Pepsi to Dr. Pepper to Sprite. A month ago, I quit and now I'm drinking nothing but water. I don't feel any different but time will tell. I don't smoke or drink, so that isn't much of an issue.

I'm about 40lbs overweight. When I became less active (spent more time in the office rather than production and digging holes), I didn't change my diet. In the last 5 months, I've cut back on my intake. I can't tell you when was the last time I had a hamburger. I'm eating more broccoli and chicken though the portions are smaller, but I haven't lost any weight.

I really need to get back to doing some sort of exercise to replace the manual labor I used to do.

I already eat like a child, but I have been trying to cut dwn on my sugar intake. Mostly because I read it can cause blurry vision. Can't stripe with blurry vision.

#1 if you drink tons of sodas.......you need one of these!!! most pre-bottled sodas are sugar ladened, or artificial sweeteners which are really bad. i have had one since last may when wife got me one for mty birthday. I LOVE IT!!!! 1st off, when i want a soda, I HAVE TO MAKE IT. this has caused me to cut back to 1 or 2 16 oz. a day. 2ndly, I CAN ADJUST THE FLAVOR/sugar level per drink. the flavor syrup is 100% natural sugar, and i add maybe 1/2 to 3/4 of an oz to a 16 oz bottle of carbonated water. the charge canister lasts about a month. you take the empty one in and get a refilled one for $14.

Dave, get Krill Oil instead of cod liver oil. Packed with omega 3's and no fishy burps.

Dave Draper...

I really wasn't "into" the monthly health posts here, when they were popular.

My current situation is...I am coming up to 69 years old, weigh around 185 pounds, still 6'2". Feel young and healthy.

We definitely eat healthier here in Mexico...more fish, chicken and veggies than back in Canada.

Still smoke tobacco and drink alcohol though. (personal choice [Confused] )

For me (us) the best way to stay healthy is to "Don't worry, Stay happy" We have been doing that for over 5 years now.

No work, no schedule, no worries!! [Big Grin]

It works for us, but probably wouldn't for most folks.

Hey OP. you are recommending the Soda Stream? You must have heard that on the Sean Hannity radio show. I heard them advertise them there one day.

So, you agree with Hannity?? [Rolling On The Floor]

All kidding aside, I was wondering about those.

[Cool]

I think sugar intake in general, at least from refined sugar or corn sweeteners, should be avoided as much as possible. Being a sugar addict for most of my life, makes this difficult.
There are times, I would do just about anything, for a dish of ice cream or a piece of pie.

We've cut out a lot of fats, eat lots of fish and chicken, tons of veggies, and I walk about 2 miles, every other day. I try to make it a point to exercise on the alternate days, but laziness gets in the way at times.

I've lost a bit of weight, but one health chart I looked at recently, said I should weigh 148 pounds, according to my BMI. Another study said not to use the BMI, because it doesn't distinguish between muscle and fat. So I ignore it. I'm at 170, and looking for 160-165. That's where I've been for most of my life, and I feel comfortable there.

Gave up smoking many years ago, but we do have an occasional drink. Supposedly, a couple of beers or a glass of wine can be beneficial, so we take advantage of the offerings.

Personally, I think probably one of the best ways to stay healthy is to do everything in moderation, like said above, and to remove as much stress and worry from our lives. In other words......simplify. Stress can kill you, just as fast as a bushel of Cinnabons.

Been keeping busy/active.

Trying to cook most everything we eat (avoiding processed foods as much as we can).

Trying to cut-back on the sugar also.

Spring is around the corner. Time to become even more active. (time to shead the winter coat)

Peace,
Bob

Glad to see some health discussions resurrected on here. I was doing them monthly, but sadly, felt there really wasn't much interest.

Personally, 2012 had been a year filled with stress for me, brought on by the health troubles of two of my loved ones. I was thrown into the mode of caregiver, and I soon discovered what all that encompassed. The sacrifices of that oftentimes seems to go unappreciated. Truth is, it's the most rewarding of jobs. A caregiver is an angel, whose halo and wings are not easily earned.

The stress impacted my health as well. I had not kept up with my normal fitness activities, and to make matters worse, I did a whole lot more stress eating. I was eating the wrong stuff, and much of it was sugar.

Fast forward to today, and I'm making my way back. But it's a slow process. I have signed back up for the gym, and have been getting back to my favourite classes. Zumba and Yoga.

Biking season starts back up when the time changes this weekend, so I'm looking forward to that. And slowly, I'm getting back to my power walks.

Still flirting with disaster on the sugar, but I'm working on weaning back. [Smile]

I can't stand myself right now. haha I'm about 10 pounds heavier, (maybe more, I'm afraid to look) and my jeans are not a happy place for me anymore. Can't wait to get comfy in them again.

Thru all this, I've had some wake up calls. Getting older is not for sissies. [Smile] I've always known the importance of maintaining a healthy lifestyle, yet I've had some eye openers lately. I"ve been seeing the very real consequences of lifestyle choices. Letting myself slide and feeling the changes in my wellness because of it has re-enforced a lot of things for me. It's brought me to a new level of understanding.

Ernie and I lost weight in 2011 and have kept it off for 14 months. Enie lost 65 , I lost 33 pounds. We have a pemanent lifestyle diet change to low carbohydrate high fat.
Our blood values , especially our cholestrol and blood sugar values have come down to the true normal range. My engy
level is that of a 40 year old. (I am 61) Neither of us need as much sleep.
Can't wait until it is warm enough to go paddling on our many
nearby rivers and lakes. Fishing season will Be starting soon. I also like to exercise my Standrd Poodle by running him along side my bicycle on the local bike path.
