What brand of acrylics is best for topcoating a very smooth surface, for instance a picture frame, and drying with no brushmarks at all?
And, if it's necessary to prime it first, to get the smooth finish, what kind of priming and wd you sand the priming?
I've been experimenting with all sorts of different paints, brushes, etc., and havent been able to come up with the answer.

Precision Board's FSC88 primer gives the smoothest finish I've seen from an acrylic primer. Follow the directions. I've sprayed Aquacote over it & got pretty smooth finishes. No acrylic will flow out like the old 1-shot though, but generally the acrylics will long outlast the 1-shot.

Thin the acrylic a lot w. water, and brush it on in (several) thin coats. (Let it dry between coats!) This works great for 'flat' acrylic paint.

Spraying helps, but you have to thin it way down, You still have overspray, and it seems like it stays tacky for sometimes days. So, it's not (yet) the greatest thing since sliced bread.

I've heard people recently talk about thinning acrylic paint with Future floor "wax" because it is basically a clear acrylic and allows the paint to flow better.

There's a product called Flotrol which is an acrylic additive. It extends the drying time so that one can brush out a very even coat, which of course, contributes to a much smoother finish. There is a trade-off however. Adding Flotrol will definately add to the time required for the paint to dry & cure, and this will vary from colour to colour.
The satin or semi gloss finishes usually give better results than the high gloss types.

Acrylic latex enamels. My favorite is Coronado RustScat but it is mainly a SE part of the US product. Sherwin-Williams has a similar product which I think is called All Surface Enamel. Not positive on that name.

The 1-shot black I have certainly flows out brushmark-free, but takes an enormous time to dry. That's why I've been trying the acrylics. I'll get ahold of some Ronan and see if that does any better. And the Flotrol sounds promising.

I ordered Floetrol at my local Rona & they got a product called Wagner PaintEasy. I like it a LOT better....

Using the right brush really helps also. Try the.. Mack 2962.. latex will flow like 1Shot does & a smooth stroke with the help of Flotrol or Wagner Paint Easy or the Pledge clear floor wax or Nova color has some really super good paste acrylic & would think Nova colors would also work awesome using them in Arcola was a ease saw them lettered & brushed & they looked smooth as glass be a rough wall or smooth surface.
