The Update includes fixes for the current Windows 8 build we have. Once we get the final version of Win8 I'm sure there will be one or two things to fix, but with the Update it's running pretty good right now.

I've had an ongoing repair ticket on X6 since I loaded it. The Service Pack fixed two of the three issues I had. I can now scan with a 64 bit system and "Contour" works, rather than uselessly sitting on a menu ignoring all efforts to get it to start.

Corel still needs to fix the "Apply" button on the dockers. Hitting "Enter" doesn't apply like it did on all previous versions. It is now necessary to mouse over and click "Apply" to make it work, which is a backwards step in functionality. I think every tab and window I've ever seen until the dockers on X6 allows hitting "Enter" on the keyboard to accomplish the same as mouse clicking "Apply". This issue was there on the evaluation version I tried on a 32 bit XP system and is still there on a 64 bit W7 machine after the service pack.

I just did a little more experimenting. The "Apply" glitch is in the "Transformations" Docker and is only in the "size" portion of it when "Proportional" is checked and a size is entered from the keyboard. If "Proportional" is not checked, "Enter" works and if the resizing is done by mouse clicking the up and down arrows, "Enter" works.

We tried to fix those Enter= Apply things in the SP....you're right on the Transformation docker>Size....I'll ask QA to look into that

I will download the service pack tomorrow- I must say that I think you guys did a great job with this version... I started with DRAW! in version 1 close to 20 years ago and I have used versions (1,2,3,4,5,7,9,11, and X3) extensively- I liked the fact that they worked and for the most part, were very reliable. When you are trying to make a living, you want good tools that can get the job done. Thanks for all the hard work.

BTW- I also use Illustrator for about half of my work... I still prefer to use CorelDRAW! [Big Grin]

I will second Michael's endorsement of CorelDRAW. I've been using it for twenty years, using every version since Corel 2. I'm self taught and found it intuitive and easy to learn. I also have several iterations of Illustrator and have gotten nowhere on my own learning that program and have had to resort to online training to do anything in Illy.

A couple glitches aside, X6 is my favorite. I like the new features.

David,
What new features are there?

Posted by David Harding (Member # 108) on :

Preston,

Just a few that I've noticed:

Smart Carver in PhotoPaint helps to remove unwanted background seamlessly. I haven't gotten to use this yet but will quite a bit.

The dimensioning tools have a nicer appearance.

Type handling is improved.

It has 64 bit support for newer processors. I just got a 64 bit W7 system with i7 processor and SSD. The new computer runs laps around my old XP system.

X6 has support through CS5. I'm sure it will soon handle CS6.

Some of the dockers have more options in them.

Overall, I like the X6 experience over X5, which I really liked.

I can tell you that 'text' handling/manipulation/etc in CorelDraw DESTROY Illustrators weak attempt.

You guys might also want to try...
PHOTO-PAINT
File> File Format Plugins>Export>PhotoZoom Pro2

It helps taking lower resolution files and making them bigger...might help when printing small files on the large digital printers.

Hi Tony...Like many others, I have been a faithful user of CorelDraw since version 2.

I currently use version X3.

I know I was late on the "special deal" for X3 users to buy the upgrade to X6.

I'll be damned if I will pay a full price version of X6 after 20 years of faithful purchases!

What's up with that?

X3 to X6 requires a "full Version" price tag???

I know I only use CorelDraw for non-profit stuff these days, but I have always loved the program.

The current "upgrade" process sucks.

Sorry to say that to a rep for a company that I admire.

I didn't make those rules so I'm not taking it personally :> Folks in engineering have little to do with pricing, availability...etc.

At this point, there are a few options for you give you are not using CorelDRAW for commercial purposes:
- There is a new subscription model (rental) for the software instead of paying for a full version or upgrade.
- CorelDRAW Home & Student X6, which will be released shortly. It's a slightly trimmed down of the full version but would be good for newsletter/flyers for a non profit organization
- It's possible that the folks in Product Management might run a sale, or an extension of the upgrade policy in the near future, and if they do you could jump back in then.
- Some people have gone as far as to buy X4 or X5 on ebay for a discounted price so they would qualify for an upgrade.

Hopefully some of these suggestions help you out.

Tony

Thanks, Tony I started with CorelDRAW with version 1 when you supplied the video. You've done a great job with the software over the years. Thanks again!

okay, tony, here I go!!!!

with the upgrade arrives an annoying new "feature" ...

previously, if you had artistic text on the screen in a given font, say, Times Roman, and you placed your text cursor at the end of the text and held down the backspace key and deleted all the text and then started typing in new text, the new text would be in the same font, in this example, Times Roman.

NOW it goes back to the default text once the last character is deleted--in my case it defaults back to Arial. Very annoying. 20 years one way and now this? Strange. Now I've had to retrain my brain to highlight the text and start re-typing so I don't default out of the font I want.

just saying ....

Hey Mike!

Yes, I've heard of this before. As you mention, if you delete all the text it goes back to the default style. Yes, this new, and not ideal.

Note if you press Ctrl+Home to select all the text, and then start typing, it will keep the text settings.

Like many others, I'm a fan of Corel. However, I would normally wait until the first "update" or "bug fix" before I upgrade.
This time may be different though because Graphics Unleashed just released a scathing review of the latest release...

Foster is a very knowledgeable guy and well trusted in the community. As he should be as he has been supporting this product longer than I have (which, BTW, hits 19 years next week). But on this one, we have differing opinions.

If you follow the threads on www.coreldraw.com you'll find many people dispute what he wrote on his site and believe the Update is well worth it.

From his blog:

Issue #1 - Only occurs if you have macro "EZ metrics" installed. Other then this, the new (kick butt) Align and Distribute docker works for all other users.

Issue #2 - It happened once and he's never been able to duplicate it again. Despite knowing this, he has not modified, or commented about this, on the blog.

Issue #2 - Was not introduced in the Update, it exists in the GM. Corel didn't know this issue existed, and no customer had reported it, before the Update went out. The issue occurs if there are outlines around the text that is fitted to the path. If the outline is removed, the effect will work correctly. This issue has been flagged at Corel for the next Update.

I would urge you to look at the other threads on coreldraw.com for more opinions on the current Update and whether it's worth installing or not.

Tony, with X6 when I remove something that was powerclipped, I get an "X" through the original object. How do I get rid of the "X"? It even shows up when I export a file to Illustrator.

Hey Glenn:
Something new to X6 is you can have an PowerClip placed on a page so you can use it as a graphic placeholder. Dragging content over a PowerClip frame now gives options like to automatically place it inside, to place it inside and delete the former contents.....

In the first release, once you've extracted the content, you can right click on the PowerClip and select Frame Type>None. This will convert it back to a regular object.

In Update 1, settings have been added to Tools>Options>Workspace>PowerClip so you can define what happens with an empty PowerClip container.

Hope that helps,
T.
