To all Letterheads & friends, I've just received a message from Liddy Drane. She says:
Hi - there is no gentle way of telling you this but Dave came off his Harley last night and unfortunately didn't survive. Our family and friends here in Oz have been wonderful but like me are trying to get their heads around what has happened. x Liddy
Dave was one of the nicest blokes I know, and that is a really tough thing for poor Liddy up at Nambour. Very sorry to hear the tragic news...

The news reported tonight, and our son Nick heard it on TV as well: "On the Sunshine Coast, another motorcyclist died when he came off his bike.
The man, in his 60s, crashed into a curb at about 11pm yesterday at Bli Bli. He was taken to Nambour General Hospital but died a short time later."

My best memory of him. Dave and liddy and his brother in law and sis were at my place in Slidell. We had dinner at the Outback and promptly went to the local pyro shop to celebrate the New Year..
We purchased $200 worth of pyro technica and returned home to play a little.
My two boys Dace and his bro inlaw commenced to exploring fire ant mounds and detonating the fireworks New Years night 2004/2005.
There they were. Four kids having the blast of a lifetime. I'm not sure who was having more fun, Dave and his bro inlaw, or my two young boys. We laughed and played while the wives watched and worried wondering when the sheriff would arrest us all.
The smoke was like fog. It covered the area for half a block in every direction.
Out of the fog appeared a sheriff unit just as one of Dave's largest of mortar shells went off. The wives headed for the house while we guys rolled and roared with laughter. They didn't know fireworks was legal and that I was a dep. sheriff.
We had a corn snake and gently coaxed Liddy into holding it. Her first.. She has a picture for a memory.

My heart breaks with the loss of my far away friend Dave Drane....We met via forums somewhere around 2004 and finally had the chance to meet in person at a Vegas ISA show afew years back...Dave and Liddy came to south Georgia to visit us and stayed a few days on one of their "drives across the USA"....We had a fabulous time that I will never ever forget... Dave and his ultimate generousity has helped me from "across the big pond" again and again with his creative ideas sharing, tips on sign painting, and sharing pictures with his love of signs and "kookabura whispering".... I can honestly say that I am indeed a better hand painter and signmaker from knowing Dave Drane... My condolences go out to Liddy and Dave's family, Dave made friends all around the world over and that is a special Letterhead indeed... RIP Dave Drane....

Such a heartbreak. We will miss you Dave. Dave and Liddy such a couple in love; such great people, caring for others, I will always love Dave and Liddy; there is too much to say. You will never meet a guy like Dave; he gave so much of himself for life and will sadly be missed.
Dave and Liddy spent time visiting me in the dead of winter to meet my family when they could have been in Florida or someplace warm. They loved Chicago and traveled quite often but were true to the friends and family in Australia. They invited me over for several years and finally I managed to get there, to meet all the good Aussies and New Zealanders. Liddy and Dave's hospitality was so generous and they loved the little things I brought over like letterhead stories and meet tshirts, memorabilia from the US and such. They adored the United States. Dave just wrote to me a week or so ago, and said they were just getting busy in the shop again. He knew the trade like no one I ever met. He could use the old time brushes and gold leaf and made everything personal and enjoyable. We used to talk to Si on the Skype, and Ian.
We had a lot of fun times together through the years and sharing different experiences with Dave and Liddy. My family and grandchildren will be very sad when I tell them tomorrow. I just found out 1/2 hour ago.
To you, caring for those in need and animals. Dave loved his birds and spent a lot of time loving and nurturing them, he was so much in touch with real life and had that heart of gold we only hear about in songs.
Liddy will be needing our thoughts and prayers and letters. Liddy and Dave if you can hear me, May the spirit be with you, you have changed many lives, including mine.

Well, Dave's funeral was attended by over 350 freinds today. Many wanted to speak, but speakers were limited to just four, to keep it short, and there was time for more talking afterwards.
He was a lovely & great bloke. Many spoke of his crazy sense of humour, plus his birds, his golf, his Harley, and his signwriting, plus the love of his life, Liddy.
