Yesterday I was doing a 23k patent leaf job on a log truck. Come time to spin the gold, I noticed the swirlls weren't that notiseable. Shop temp about 47 degrees. I thought " Well maybe it will look better in the sun. Then just before I put on a coat of clear, I hit it with the heat gun to make sure it was very dry.And since I had my little spinner in my pocket. I spin the center of one of the letters and to my amazement the spin looked perfect. So I warmed up the rest of the letters and re-spun them. What a difference. So does gold spin better when it's warm?

Alicia, It is not the gold, but the size. I was taught by a gilder that worked at American LaFrance Fire Equipment in the 40's and he said, for the best guild, wait until the last minute (the size is almost dry) to guild. If you miss it and the size is too dry for the gold to adhere,simply heat the surface and you can gild perfectly! Sounds like you discovered an age old recipe!
