Our 13 year old doggie Jake journeyed to the other side today to join LC and Sandy. He was a special guy and there is a huge hole in our house tonight. Jake always brought a smile to customers and others that visited our shop. Kel, Mike, Dan, Jon and Sarge got to meet him in "person"

A couple of Christmases ago Mark Fair worked with me to give Laurie a very special gift...
 -
The inscription says 'Laurie's Jake'. That was the same note I put on the check I wrote when I gave her Jake for her birthday 13 years ago.
It's a rough day today, but we'll heal, we always have. Please give your pets a hug or think of Jake boy, he was one of a kind.

Hi Duncan - sorry to hear about your loss....

I've lost several dogs over the years, and each one was a time of genuine grief. Dogs are faithful to the end.... they are happy to see you no matter the time or circumstance, and you can count on their trust and friendship where the same cannot always be said for man.

Funny,.... my little pal Trixie just walked up for some attention as I'm writing this.

Here's a cool dog poem for ya:

I talk to him when I'm lonesome like;
And I'm sure he understands.
When he looks at me so attentively,
And gently licks my hands;
Then he rubs his nose on my tailored clothes,
But I never say naught there'at.
For the good Lord knows I can buy more clothes,
But never a friend like that.

W. Dayton Wedgefarth

My dog's.... Trixie

Thank you for your kind words everyone. It occurs to me that a lot more of my letterhead friends met Jake at my shop, than at my home. Some that come to mind... Judy Creed (Judster), Jackie Hos (Covey), Pat and Ruth Welter, Cal Trauter, Tramp Warner, Bruce Anders, Rick Janzen, and more.

Awwww, dammit . . . Duncan . . . as you were there with kind (and understanding) words for me with our Golden's early departure in 2009, these words I offer you are no less well-intended . . . I'm so very sorry for the hurt on your family's heart today.

We all mourn our pets when we lose them - those who are pet owners - but something about a Golden Retriever and their desire to be so unconditionally loving, affable and happy (not to mention such high intelligence, good behavior and politeness) makes a day like today tough to get through. (I am very prejudiced about the breed though!

But you know you will . . . and the memory of a long-lived dog (13 years is terrific) is one of great fortune for family AND for pet. That's why we don't want it to end . . . but the time makes itself known. What is bad for us becomes good for them . . .

These words sent to me by a dear friend may be a tad corny - but they helped me get through more than one tough day with all my 'boys' over the years:

From a Grateful Dog

You're giving me a special gift,
So sorrowfully endowed,
And through these last few cherished days,
Your courage makes me proud.

But really, love is knowing
When your best friend is in pain,
And understanding earthly acts
Will only be in vain.

So looking deep into your eyes,
Beyond, into your soul,
I see in you the magic that will
Once more make me whole.

The strength that you possess,
Is why I look to you today,
To do this thing that must be done,
For it's the only way.

That strength is why I've followed you,
And chose you as my friend,
And why I've loved you all these years...
My partner till the end.

Please, understand just what this gift
You're giving, means to me,
It gives me back the strength I've lost,
And all my dignity.

You take a stand on my behalf,
For that is what friends do.
And know that what you do is right,
For I believe it, too.

So one last time, I breathe your scent,
And through your hand I feel,
The courage that's within you,
To grant me this appeal.

Cut the leash that holds me here,
Dear friend, and let me run,
Once more a strong and steady dog,
My pain and struggle done.

And don't despair my passing,
For I won't be far away,
Forever here, within your heart,
And memory I'll stay.

I'll be there watching over you,
Your ever-faithful friend,
And in your memories I'll run,
... a young dog once again.

I still cry when I read that (not just for the lame rhymes LOL) . . . because I feel that pain of loss again ever so slightly . . . Then I smile for the happy memories that I choose to remember instead!!

You do the same . . .

So sorry...how easily they become our buddies and steal our hearts...each with their own unique personality...they are beloved members of the family and when they pass from us the hole that is left is immense...so sorry for your loss...I'm taking your advice and I'm off right now to give my dogs a hug in Jake's memory.
