A while back we tried Modern Masters acrylic metallic paints. We loved them. They hold up well and don't tarnish like other brands we have tried. The range of colors they offer is stunning and with a little mixing and blending anything we can imagine is possible.
At the last Sign Magic Workshop we built a new sign for our driveway cautioning folks to slow down as they entered. The students we had at the workshop kept Bec and I hopping. The sign didn't get finished during those days. But as I can squeeze time in I've been hacking away at it, finishing the sculpting a while back and starting in on the painting too. I had painted the rooster a metallic red and was fairly happy with it. Bec wasn't quite as happy...
So she broke out a brush and multiple colors of the Modern Masters paint. In a short while she had transformed my red rooster into a thing of beauty!
In the next days we'll finish putting a second coat of paint on the lettering and paint up the rocks on the bottom... then he'll go out to do his job beside the driveway.

Cool deal.. I've seen those but was leery of trying them. Do the require a sealer or clearcoat. I just finally started playing with their rust and patinas.

Just another Dan (and Bec) masterpiece.
This weekend I had a young man visiting the studio and I took him on a "tour" of Sawatzky's magic work place (through video) and he was blown away by Dan's creativity. He has a degree in fine art but said they didn't teach him anything like that in college.
I've been there and still can't believe it.

We started with the metallics from Sophisticated Finishes but found their color range was limited and the pieces tarnished over time. So we went back to do a little more research and found the Modern Masters line of paints. They have proved to be much more durable and brush on fantastic. The line of colors is spectacular. Best of all there's a dealer who is only about 15 minutes from our shop.
At first blush the paints are expensive but they go a long ways and cover well. We use two coats most of the time... sometimes 3 if I want an extra amount of sparkle and depth. And they are water based acrylic paints which we use exclusively in our shop.
In our experience they do not need to be clear coated (as did the Sophisticated Finishes. We've been using them for a little more than a year with good results. I also talked with others who have been using them a long while with good results.
We will be giving their iron oxide (rusting paint) a good workout on the MultiCam boardroom project. We have two gallons of that on hand for the project.

Their Rusting and Copper patina Stuff is Cool. Like you I started using the MM as I can get anything within a 3 block trip.
Joe Crummly has been using Sculpt Novue With Great Success but its just a pain to get a hold of. I am too impatient to order samples the use then order large Batch's.. I always thought it was for interior use only.. It's amazing what happens when you take a minute to read the packaging.
