Hey I'm back here on the "Right Coast" getting caught-up on work. I noticed I'm running low on patten gold, do I have to get a second mortgage for my next order? How much is a pack of 23K patten gold and who has the best price? Maintain AJ

I just met this fellow at a meet, very good guy. He even supplied the gold for the meet. His gold is good quality and he offers a discount to people in the trade. His name is Jim Harris, here's his site.

I'm sure you'll shop around but you might give him a call for a quote, seems like he has some very fair pricing. Mention your in the business.

I just bought a box of gold yesterday from a merchant here on the BB... W&B Gold Leaf (Wehrung & Billmeier Co.) wbgoldleaf@aol.com 773-472-1544

Friendly folks, good prices and prompt delivery... it arrived this morning - even across the Canadian border.

Contact Ron and Kristi Percell at Letterhead Sign Supply (merchants here) they would have what you need.

I haven't seen much difference in the prices of gold. I'm with FranCisco about ordering from Ron and Kristi at Letterhead Sign Supply. Good folks.

forgive my ignorance...
looking at the lagoldleaf website I noticed a tool I have never heard of...
what is an agate burnisher?
There seems to be many varieties, all kinda expensive for what it looks like they are, what are they?

agate stone used for burnishing.
wolf tooth, pig tooth and diamond are also usable

We've bought from Letterhead Sign Supply with satisfaction.

I'm in the same boat - just about out, but probably won't be buying a pack all at once.

Mark,

No reason to feel uninformed on this topic. I can't remember seeing a post dedicated to the explanation of the “Bole” process on this forum.

Burnishing of gold is a standard for custom decorative picture frames and furniture. They are the major users of gold. But it's for interior use.

The process goes like this. A gesso is applied, followed by a fine clay known as Bole. This takes several applications and lots of sanding to get a perfectly smooth surface. The clay (Bole) which comes in several colors, is mixed with a slight amount of hide glue. A dry frame is brushed with plain water which activates the glue. Because the surface is hard, unlike oil sizes, it can be burnished to a brilliant sheen.

AJ, we just got a pack of patent from Arnold's daughter who is managing Art Essentials of NY now.
We got the cheap Chinese gold and it could be bonded a tad tighter to the carrier sheet, but works fine.

Thanks Joe, very informative

I got a pack of Chinese leaf last year.....thought I was saving a few bucks.

Problem is, it's 3"x3"......that 3/8"s makes a big difference in volume over 500 leafs.

False economey!

The chinese gold is also thinner so it really doesn't cover as well as the german or italian. It's still gold and not a bad product at all, just not a "deal" as Joe already explained. You pay less but also get less.

A few suppliers want to "bad" the chinese gold, it's not bad just know what you are getting in quantity that's all.

Sepp sells it

Crocodile is my choice for patent leaf, too. Great stuff. The last pack I bought was $550, but I'm sure it is more now.

The gold I bought this week from W&B Gold Leaf (Wehrung & Billmeier Co.) was $633.45 ... it sounds like it hasn't gone up too bad.

Has anyone tried the Bole and burnishing?

Posted by Alan Johnson (Member # 2513) on :

Thanks for all the great info. I guess gold hasn't gone that crazy. I used an Australian gold for years, Extra thick and cheaper than the rest but Art Ess. has discontinued it. I have never tried Crocodile from Sepp. I'll give them all a call. Thanks for your help. Maintain AJ
