I didn't do this sign, but I saw this one go up today here in Atmore. I guess Bargain Bin decided to start off the new decade with a new image...

I'm a little jealous, they didn't even call me for a price... and then it's one of those signs that make you kick yourself and say... "Man, why didn't I think of that..."

Like I said, I didn't do it, but I like to learn what I can even from other people's designs.... so is there anything you would have changed on this design?

You could learn a lot just by studying the kerning and word spacing. Delicious.

Obviously they've sold out of all their bargain-priced letter Is, just two Bs, two As and a few others left & they'll have had total clearance!

"I" think it's nice. [Wink]

Amazing what you can do with a Cricut, huh?

Yer jis jellus, Jon.

You couldn't ask for better competition.

That must've been done by BargaIn SIgns...

Probably designed to look cheap, a bargain bin dont want an expensive looking sign do they?+

I think it "fits" what it advertises!

I was thinking if 'economy' was in mind, he could have left out that entire 4'x8' sheet of aluminum between 'The' and 'Bargain' that has absolutely nothing on it...

I have heard that negative space is important though...

I Guess I am a little slow...
Why are the I's so fat?

The worst part of this, I bet the owner thinks it's a great sign. [Bash]

See, this is what happens when you put all the time and effort into a sign and they go and put Bad Lighting on it. [Smile]

The more I wiev it, the better it looks.

Actually, the worst part of it is, I never get the easy layouts like this ... and did ya notice the G is a little weak??? Is this the cheapest copy of freeware Hobo ever??? Was it cut with an X-Acto??? And did Jon take the photo in the dark so no one would recognize him and think he built it??? So many questions..................

Posted by Russ McMullin (Member # 5617) on :

They probably customized the letters so the logo can't easily be duplicated.

Posted by stein Saether (Member # 430) on :

x acto cuts are good stuff, why do you have to be so, ah elite??

Wonder how many screws were used...extrapolating from the lighted area around "THE" I wouldn't be surprized if there were 70 or 80 screws in the face of that sign...probably would make a pretty crazy daytime picture as well when all the screws could be seen.

Uglier than a sack of bloody worms. but hey, we are talking about it?

I'll bet they're missing two I's from their bin!
Why not just use BrushScript?!

Well, I guess this could be a chain..... and they may have an in-house graphics designer....

I think it just needs a thick red outline and then it would be perfect.

Actually, as I've passed it more, it's sorta starting to grow on me.... if they had only double-stroked one more letter... like maybe the A's or the H...

Oh well.. I guess it can't appeal to EVERYone...

Thanks all for the helpful tips... I'll keep them in mind when designing... so a short review...

1. Random kerning and spacing between words is good... makes the sign interesting or adds 'Pazzammm' as we officially refer to it in the sign world.

2. If you feel like you are overusing Brush Script, it's always a safe bet to break out the Hobo font...

3. To add visual impact on a 4'x50' sign with limited copy, use a condensed type... using an extended font would be expected, but by defying common logic and general decency, you can bring out the aforementioned 'Pazzammm'...

4. Adding "White Space" is very important. This is defined by having using whole sheets of white rectangular aluminum with no graphics on it. This effect was also used on this sign... (done by the very same company.... unfortunately, the restaurant owner didn't appreciate that hallmark of good design and has now made them come back and put a bigger logo on this sign... the logo now laps onto the side pieces by about a foot...)

5. When creating a 'Logo' or 'Brand Identity' it's best to follow the SISSY method... which stands for 'Simple Is Simply SnazzY'. It can be as simple as picking an important letter, modifying it to an abstract shape and doubling it's stroke.... this leads the eye to that important letter... which in turn then defines the whole business.... without the need for other gimmicks such as extended type... 'PAZZAMMM!!'

6. And finally.... if you are a little low on confidence about the visual impact of your 'Brand Identity' adding a generous sprinkling of silver screws will add that little extra 'UMMMPHA' you are looking for... (similar to 'PAZZAMMM' but a little different... we'll cover that another time..)

Thanks all..... I really do feel better now about not being contacted to give a price on this job.....
