While the work is certainly detailed and well done, the designs of most of them reminded me of wraps I've seen. After the initial attraction to eye candy I'm not sure what I've seen as the images were far too busy and jumbled. Some of the simpler designs worked well.

Detailed is what Digital photography is all about, correct? And I am led to believe that these were done by Getty Images. Goalie masks as well as sports helmets are a great place for this type of artwork.

Getty Images is a stock photography resource, where they got the pictures from. I don't know if these are wraps or good old fashioned airbrushing, but it's a shame only 2 artists are even mentioned. I think whomever painted/wrapped these should've gotten credit where it was due (good or bad design).

"Digital Wrap" was exactly what came to my mind as well. If these are the best of the decade they should check out Letterville, because IMO there have been some helmets that blow those out of the water here.

Dana, I like custom race-car helmets.... so I thought most of the masks were very cool. I don't think consideration for the ability to read these guys cell phone number at 75' goes into the design phase much...
I'd look at it more like a good tattoo... one that looks cool from a distance, but really has to be studied to get all the fine detail....

Okay I guess I should clarify and perhaps temper my comment. Goalie helmets are tough to paint, I know, I've done quite a few. It's really hard to paint your subject and have enough definition that it can be recognized from any distance at all. Perhaps that isn't considered of importance to others, I just know it drives me nuts trying to make out what's painted on their masks when they show the NHL tenders on TV. The reason I say I am reminded of digital wraps is there is so much going on that from any distance it just becomes a mush of colours. Unfortunately, most customers have a dozen ideas of all the things they want painted on their masks. It's tough to talk them down. The masks shown on the site Dana posted are all well executed. I didn't mean to insinuate they were actually wrapped, just that in my opinion most of them fall into the same trap a lot of digital prints do which in the end makes them pretty illegible. Jane posted a link to one of the letterhead painters I had in mind when I commented.

I also agree that the helmets, especially goalie helmets are not intended to be read from a distance..and I don't think any of them are digital. The detail that some of these artists paint is incredible... I've painted a few helmets in my day and Goalie helmets are a very difficult subject to paint, more than a race car helmet.. goalie helmets have numerous indentations and ventilation holes the painter has to deal with. The race car helmets are awesome as are the goalie helmets... thanks for the links.

Here's a link that CBC Hockey Night in Canada did on the history and modern day painting of goalie masks..
I believe that the store bought mass produced masks are Vinyl but the custom ones are more likely paint.. as Joey and Kelly pointed out..I stand corrected... thank you.

I think personal taste comes into play here a whole lot. This "look" is very popular. It's way to overdone for my tastes but it's what is selling. Poorly designed wraps sell also.
There are some forms of music played today that I just don't care for at all. Does this make the music bad because I don't like it
Is Mexican food better than Chineese food just because I prefer it
This is the top ten list according to SI. As far as raint and design, they are the general public and we all know what they are like
