My poor little cell phone finally bit the dust. I'd like to keep the same number, so I'm off to a Rogers Nokia store to see what they have to offer.

This is sort of what I have but let's say for fun it's about 5 years older with no features..

 -

It's just a phone that has a bad camera. Nothing else.

I imagine monthly plans will jump in price too depending on what kind of phone I choose.

I currently pay around $60/mo for 250 daytime minutes and unlimited evenings and weekends. I'm not really desiring to pay much more than that.

But technology is taking over and maybe I'm missing out by holding myself back? If I stepped a few notches up, I can see email access and a dayplanner being very helpful.

So, I ask for your own personal recommendations. I know some phones are better for their service and some preferred for the internet features they provide.

I'd love to hear what works for you.

Many thanks! I need one yesterday so I need to move quick.

Hi Donna. I switched to an iphone 15 months ago and never regretted it. Use the camera for site visits and upload them onto mobileme server. They are then accessible on work and home pcs. All my contacts and calender information are always in sync not to mention the ability to access email and internet on the move. use it for tons of other fun stuff too like sports updates, facebook, a fully functioning sat nav and great viseo camera. Can't recommend it enough

First off- you need to figure out what features that you can't live without- there are standard camera phones, full texting keyboards, multimedia phones, PDA/Smartphones, and the iPhone, which does just about everything. I don't know what kind of provider that you use, but our provider has tons of internet deals and packages with just about any type of phone you can imagine.

You should be able to upgrade to very nice phone that will do alot of cool things for very little money- the extra charges will be whether you add a data package or texting package- these are varied in pricing- if you aren't going to use the internet feature or texting feature much, I wouldn't add them (the iPhone is a great phone, but part of the service requires that you add unlimited data package as part of the plan- you could easily add another $40 to your current plan of $60)

If you are happy with the phone minutes package that you have, just replace the phone with one that you like and that is capable of doing some of these things later. ( I regret the Motorolas that I bought for me and my wife because they are not very friendly when it comes to texting or internet) I have several friends that have the Samsungs and Blackberrys and really like them.

I came very close to buying an iPhone, but couldn't really justify the extra $40/month on top of my $70/month that I already pay for phone service.

Donna, whenever I need to know which cell phone to choose I go to this site. Answer the questions which pertain to what it is that you need and this site will give you your answer.

I remember reading somewhere... the iphone was best for ______ vs. the blackberry was best for ________. If I could only remember what that was! [Razz]

I think one was better for internet and one for quality phone sound but I could be off.

I'm not addicted to cell phones..I turn mine on when I need to call someone when away from home or on the road.

Don't need a camera phone..my Canon camera works just fine.

My cell phone cost nothing to buy but costs $15/month on a 2 year contract and the $15/month covers more local calls than I ever make.

For long distance calls from Canada to anywhere or from Mexico to anywhere I use our Skype cell phone!! 2 cents a minute anywhere in the world.

My mate had a Blackberry and swore by it. After using my iphone, he's switching. Reckons ease of use and the range of apps available to customize the phone exactly the way you want it are the main attractions

I have had a Nokia N95 8gb, for a couple of years when I change it will be a Nokia N97, Have had Nokia phones since early 90's, bought 2 Sony Ericssons in between didn't like the menu, and they broke quickly.

Iphone....no not for me, in the begining I thought it was a great phone, a few people over here had problems with half the screen not working, and getting crap under the front surface.

Depends on what you want your phone for! Iphone over here is sold through the most expensive operators, and not worth the money.

Just saw on Nokia's website that they are coming with a 48gb Nokia N900 might be worth waiting.

I bought my kids Nokia 5800 Music Express touch screen which they are really happy with.

I love Nokia.

Last one went to the big cell phone resting place in the sky after plummeting 20ft off a scaffold onto concrete.

Went to get a new one. $600!!! Then found out my contract had expired and was given a choice of brand new one, FREE and a better 24 month contract.

At $1/day plus $20 free calls and 4 FREE numbers (wife and kids) its magic as most of my calls are incoming, and use my laptop for everything else.

Can't beat that!

Shop around for the best deal because cell phone marketing is as competitive here in Australia as digital printing [Smile]

I'm still reading. Thanks all! It's a different world out there when you don't have your cell phone friend by your side. I'll go snooping around next week.

I have an old Motorola that usually sits on my desk - uncharged. It was a gift from Mike when he bought a new one.

Usually, I swear at it rather than by it. Well, not actually, because I don't swear (not out loud, anyway).

They are handy, I know...just never got attached to one.

Donna, Do you have a Costco up there? They've got swinging deals on phones. I got my Blackberry there (with full keyboard) for $49 and got a great deal on the plan for all 3 of us as well.

If you are forgetful like me, get one with a keyboard so you can leave yourself reminders easier.

I have a Treo and I like it. I set a TON of reminders . . .

I second the full keyboard suggestion. It's SO much easier.

I didn't even think of Costco. I have to find a way to maintain my old cell number so I'll have to investigate this.

Yes, a keyboard would ROCK for me. I need reminders 24/7 and go crazy when I forget my notebook at home.

One finger typing though? Another topic completely. Can you plug it in to a regular keyboard?!? heh..

Donna, you get used to typing with your 2 thumbs very quickly.
What you can do is plug it into your computer and upload all of your contacts from Outlook. That really rocks.

Thanks Kimberly. Any info helps! I'm still cell phone-less. And it's rather.. peaceful. LOL

I bought the fancy Blackberry with all the toys. On the road, one morning at a restaurant, it slipped out of my pocket and some bozo picked it up. They are wider than a regular phone and do not fit pockets right. Sure, they have a nice little case with a good clasp, but it did manage to slip out. I went back to my old Nokia and finally upgraded to the Motorola Edge, which works fine. I do not text and could care less about the crude camera. The alarm clock is easy to use and it holds a charge for days and days. I pay $45 a month for all the service I can use. I do not need the internet when I am out and do not need to check my emails every hour. Importantly, copy down all your numbers as the transfer of the information seems to never capture all the numbers into the new phone? Less is more, I have found.

I love my iPhone. I had a Blackberry for two months and then dumped it because I couldn't get reception in my area using T-Mobile. Full bars with AT&T.

If you use or want to use T-Mobile I can probably work you a deal on my Blackberry 8900. I'm probably going to put it on eBay soon.

Love my Blackberry...

UPDATE: I picked up an iphone today. Now I need new clothes to match. LOL

The large screen for keying won me over. I could barely see the keypad on the blackberry. (with glasses on)

My old cell with nothing on it only cost $15 less / month than this fancy doodad. It was worth the jump.

Never been so lost in my life. But what a wonderful gaget!

Just curious.. the G3 is on my screen ALL the time. (can't figure out the wireless but that's another story) Does that mean I'm USING the internet, or am I only drawing from the internet when I'm utilizing internet type applications?

This no paperbook instruction thing is CRAZY. Online only. That's CRAZY.

Thanks for your opinions, all!

The wonderful world of technology. It makes our life so simple.

Hi Donna. You will only be drawing from the internet when using apps that need to download from internet. Receiving your emails also draws a small amount from internet. However you can keep a check on your downloads in settings in case you're worried about downloading more than your monthly plan allows.
Its under settings, general, usage.
You can reset it every month.
Great choice on phone

The wireless thing only needs to be set up once for each router you want to connect to. When you're within range of router, go to settings and then wifi on phone. You will be prompted for your wifi password. You will only need to enter this once and each time you're in range phone will automatically switch to wifi.

I caught this thread a little late. I just bought an iPhone and love it! All my mobile me info is now easy available, not to mention all the fun stuff. The only "downside" is everyone else has to use it when I'm home
