It always amazes me how so many different people are drawn to Fred's each year. There are both young and old, novices and the experienced...but all come together in a spirit of sharing.
This young lady spoke volumes about the Letterhead spirit. She came with no experience but wanted to learn pin striping. Magoo, Jack, and several others took her "under their wing" and headed her in the right direction. For two days she was in this position, painting everything she could find. She soaked up information and improved hour by hour. A newbie standing along side some old guys who are legends, but each seeking to learn and to teach. That is why Fred continues to do these things, I think.
And then there were the "older" guys who came and spent the weekend doing the same thing that they do all the rest of the year...and paying Fred for the privilege of doing it.
And then there is the lady that does all the work and makes everything run smoothly. This is Marilyn Self - the real reason that this gathering is so successful.
E.J. Wolf works with Mark Yearwood in Weatherford, Oklahoma. He's the guy that makes the "short Okie" look good.
Thanks Doug for the nice words. Trying to give a brief summary to Rick's life was one of the most difficult things I have ever attempted. I asked folks here (and elsewhere) to pray for me and that is what enabled me to get through it. Honestly, I don't believe it was me saying those words.
On a personal note: I memorized what I was going to say at the funeral service so that my emotions would not overwhelm me. That went fine...but at the graveside I just spoke without notes and the emotion spilled out. Afterwards, I felt completely drained (as did everyone else) and it was hard to speak without tears. Doug, as you know, when I tried to say goodbye to you, it was hard to speak. It kept going through my mind, "This may be the last time I see some of these guys".
