For a new pub opening soon. I may be outsourcing the printing too.

Any ideas?

Thanks ahead of time...

I'd let the customer know that menus are 3 to 4 times the price of regular signs. Let him put a price on it first. Then design accordingly.

#1 DONT PRINT MENUS! ... they always want small changes and balk at cost of replacing whole print.

#2 LAYOUT TIME is usually at least twice production times ... so John's comments are valid.

#3 Cut and weed in "blocks" of lines as much as possible. ... saves application times.

#4 Save your layout and allow for alterations to menu and/or prices .... see #1

#5 Try and get an opened price on a "estimate" or price on a maximum and give customer "rebate" if it don't take as much time.... he's yours forever if you do.

#6 Thank God when computers arrived ... laying out and painting menu boards by hand was a PITA!

Thanks for the info so far guys.

The project that I have is actually laying out the paper menus that the restaurants clients will use to order - not the sign.

It's a new place and they want 'upscale' look.

We've done them before and I was happy with the price I got at the time. I'm just looking for a benchmark of what others may charge for this type of work.

Thanks again

Well this is a timely post... we're doing full menus for a chain of 6 Pizza Parlours here this Month.. it is a Big Job... all of the menus are going to be different sizes and shapes as well.... For this project we printed all of the generic info first, applied overlaminate and mounted it to Dibond... then we cut the Prices out of Vinyl and then applied them over the laminate, so any changes can be made down the road.

These menus are only part of the Job we have other signs going around that are more Topic oriented, like Lasagne, nachos, donairs and stuff.

As you can see the menue has a lot of info on there. they are going to hang on an angle over the counters.

We charged for design and then the signage.

That job looks lke a "Pizza Cake" for you, mate!

PS: I did some menu boards for a pub a while ago with an elaborate ghost logo painted in the background.

Realising they were not only going to change the prices but also the menu itself, I mounted a clear acrylic sheet over the background and vinyl lettered on that.

The acrylic sheets cliped into the frames, so could easily be removed and done in the workshop for any major stuff rather than work on site.

Since I originally did them I have lost count of the changes, and once had to chage the whole layout to fit things in. Easier to replace the sheet of acrlic than the hours picking off all the old lettering!

Pat, please keep us posted.
This is something that a lot of us are getting more requests for.
I would haul a price out of my ass......$200 set up or design fee. (for 1 color printing)
If it were a full color table menu maybe start at $500-$600 first time design set up. Photos take a long time to deal with.
The copy typing is real easy for me, my wife is a professional typist/transcriptionist....she owns her own business. She does all my input on large menu type jobs, then I make it look pretty!

Yeah John, just content and spell checking a job like that takes time, at least twice by two sets eys and brains! ... Hard to correct a finished print!

$1 to $5 per line of copy

the hard part is setting up the tabs. once you have that done, its all cut-n-paste. (if you're not using tabs, you're making a lot more work for yourself)

I charged $150 for this four-panel pizza menu ($2/line because it was pretty simple). The customer supplied the info as a text file. I probably should have charged $225. (I still came out ahead, in the production of the actual signage.) I'm pretty fast at typesetting, so your milage might vary. (This job took me 2 hours)
