Hi, The help topic is simple enough but when I select the word and open Text/character formatting to put in a precise % the fields are all inactive. Is this a flaw in x4 ?
On a different problem: My drawing with a jpg in it and lucida sans cannot convert to curves. Why?

on the JPEG with lettering on it...you need to move the lettering off the picture, that why it wont convert to curves. dont do that....with text, it much easier to just type LETTERS, then go to 2nd box down on the toolbar hit it and it will let you KERN either all the letters or you can do em individually if each letter has a smal square in front of it.

You have to use your text tool to highlight the text to be able to enable the spacing tool.
I do use the individual kerning thing when the spacing is way off.

Hi, I did pull the jpg away and it converted. Should have done right off. Thanks. Yes,I know that I can kern by using the shape tool and pulling the word out but I had 6 words in list I wanted to kern to 20% so they would all be the same. My question is not answered. I did, of course, use the text tool and selected the first word (highlight?) and opened the character formatting box and the range kern fields are still greyed out. I wonder if this is the case with everyone that uses X4 ? If this does not work it is a bad thing for sure. I am upgrading from ver 8 and it worked well. I notice a few idiosynckracies with X4 that have made me feel like a novice-sorry.

You have to do the entire line or break the artistic text apart to do individual words.

I originally started with one word and the fields for range kerning are greyed out-inactive. Can someone just tell me if yours works ? I would think if mine did not work nobodies would work. A bug ?

Jerry, the Range Kerning tool is only available when you are dealing with 'Paragraph' text. Select the Text Tool, then click and drag out like you are making a box.... type in there, then highlight your words, and the 'Range Kerning' will work. It does not work on Artistic Text (stand-alone text).
One way you can work around that is to RIGHT-click on your text with the Pick tool, then select 'Convert to Paragraph Text'. Highlight all the text you want to adjust, use the Range Kerning tool... you may have to grab the paragraph sizing handles and drag it a little larger if you are spreading the text, so that the whole word will show.
When you have it like you want, simply Right-click on the word and convert it back to Artistic Text.

Hi John, OK_ I did the moves but first forgot to change to paragraph format box.(I'm glad I retired in the nich of time last year) I see that it works this time finally. Thanks very much .
I also see that character spacing is the correct term to use when looking up kerning words. Is'nt that SPECIAL?
I tried to sign up for corel forums and , of course, the password they sent me turned out to be invalid. Now what?

Jerry....... look at Bruce's post below... and disregard the switching back and forth from Paragraph to Artistic text in the vid...

Jon, I am going to respectfully disagree here...
Using X3, this is what I do.
Type a line of copy.
Go to "Text" roll down and click "Character Formatting".
Using the text tool, highlight the text.
The box labeled "Range Kerning" highlights and becomes active.
There is no need to convert the text to Paragraph Text. I swear to you, this works. I just did it as I was typing this.
I keep a "Character Formatting" box open in my tool boards. You can close it when you are done or keep it with your other tool boxes.
Have a great one!

Bruce, you are exactly right. It's the highlighting the text that makes 'Range Kerning' become active. I was going way round the world.
Jerry, ignore everything I said, except for the part about highlighting the text.
Thanks for clarifying that, Bruce...

Hi, I just tried that and after double clicking the word to highlight it ( I originally thought that meant selecting as I could'nt get it to highlight.) actvated the range kern in character formatting. I also found that one needs to use the up/down arrows to make the word kern! Not just type in 30% or so. Well, thanks to both of you and all others. Whew.
Just thought I'd add, as if I really know something ,that if one wants to have signs that read further out (depending on size) one must letterspace most words 20-40%
