Way back in about Illustrator 8 I remember drawing lines, straight and curved, that had cross marks like a railroad is shown on a map. I'm making a map showing a railroad and sure would like to be able to do this again. I have CS3. Thanks, If anyone knows.

There is probably a more elegant way, but here is how I would do it:
1. Draw the line the way you want it 2. Ctrl-C to copy it 3. Ctrl-F (paste in front) to paste the copy on top of the original 4. Ctrl-3 to hide the copy 5. Select the visible line 6. Set the "Dashed Line" properties under Stroke. This becomes the railroad tie pattern.
7. Ctrl-Shft-3 to unhide the top line 8. Set stroke properties to whatever you like (1 pt in this case). This becomes the "rail". Make sure there is no fill.
If you want to change the result to shapes, choose Object > Flatten Transparancy.
It seems like a lot of steps, but they go quick.

basically it's a normal line and a dashed line stacked on top of each other.

If you take your original base line and give it a stroke, than select it and go to object>path>outline stroke. Give that no fill and a small stroke and you'll have your double line. Than put you cross tracks on that.

Somebody e-mailed me showing there is a way to make a railroad track line with two rails and ties under brushes in Illustrator. *********** "The railroad tracks are still there. It's in the brushes. Open up your brush panel, then click up there in the upper right for options and select "open brush library" > then "Borders" and then "borders_novelty". The tracks are there." *********** in case anyone is drawing railroad maps.
