Just wondering if anyone has a method or formula for making an antiquing solution to go over gold leaf. Something that can be wiped off to leave a darker stain in the recessed parts.

Just a quick idea ... but test it first!
Wipe on and sponge off a regular waterbased brown paint. Depends on how deep the recesses are and what you want to achieve.
Real antique, you might try lightly scratching the surface of the gold first. carefully!
Again, think outside the box and play first.

what about a bit of brown (or better still, Feast Watson Black Japan) mixed with varnish, and airbrushed on where needed?

One method I've done in the past is to use a thinned clear over the gold. Let it dry good. Now, mix some dark brown, with about 25% varnish and brush over the letters. Let it sit for half an hour or so, to give it time to set up a little. Take a piece of lint-free cloth with a little thinner and wrap it tightly around a sanding block or flat board, and wipe gently over the letters. The thinner will take off the tinted varnish, except in the grooves and grain. Let dry and clear again.
Jon's way might be faster, but I'm not too sure about clearing over acrylic.

Am I the fist to notice that Rick and Tony could be brothers seperated at birth?

i like to use orange shellac, wipe it on randomly and remove randomly with denatured (methyl hydrate for canucks) alcohol. if you do this then scuff with steel wool the shellac will protect the gold so you get a quick and easy worn look to the gold, little danger of going too far

I don't know, but either one could convince the kids if they had on a Santa's Cap.

Sam, That is great! I look more like him now as I have my "winter beard" and longer hair!
