Sometimes I get confused. I see airbrushing and I think to myself, yeah, I'm an airbrusher. Then I see pinstriping, and think, I'm a striper. I see sign making and I thinks, I'm a signmaker. I see commercial vehicle lettering and of course what do I think, I'm a truck letter-er. All of this makes me confused. I don't know what I am supposed to be. And with all the new technology in the biz, it just adds to the confusion. Here I am, 24 years in the biz and 50 years old and I still don't know what I am supposed to be yet.

....and a good story teller, because you just wrote you were 50... so if that's true, who's the chick on the little picture ???

You know, Alicia, one of the ole timers I used to know, told me that "back when" a person could do so many things well, they were referred to as a "mechanic".
So, consider yourself a MECHANIC. There.

Don't lie to your friends; you can't be over 35!
For the last 40 years I've wondered what I would be when I grew up. I'm still wondering.

I hear you Alicia. Sometimes I think gosh if I would just concentrate on one aspect of my business I may get good at it. Slow down on the learning curves. But then a new customer phones. And I think yes, I have heard of doing something like that. Instead of just saying yes I have someone I know who would do a great job at that, no, I gotta figure it all out and do it myself. So that is how come I am a jack of all trades.........master of none.
I think I too am an artist. But perhaps I would be better to say I am a student. With many, many teachers.
Maybe I am a student artist. I don't think I will ever graduate this way. But that is me. And I have to accept it.

I finally grew up this March, lost my identity last week and now I have no recollection of who I am, yet I'm supposed to be at the MicroMeet and haven't a clue why
Posted by Mike Pipes (Member # 1573) on :
Can't you just say "I'm happy"?
It beats my answer when someone asks what I do for a living:
"Pretty much anything you could need or want."
Man, that gets some weird looks!!
I used to tell people I'm a 'pimp but they never believed me.

Alicia...
You are a truck letterer and striper and a sign maker, then an airbrush artist.
But you can reverse the order anytime you want. In my book, you are one of the best airbrush artists I have ever seen, right up there with the best.
Everyone does what we have to do, as far as daily work and paying the bills, but you have so much talent with images, that I think you would positively enjoy making the transition from a commercial sign endeavor, to a specialty airbrush shop.
You are one talented gal, and I don't believe the part about being 50.
If someone on this board can post a pic of the mural on your own truck, especially close ups, then folks will see what I mean.
Regards, Jeff

You can easily say you're a Commercial Sign Artist, that will cover every title you mentioned. but you still tops in my books what ever you choose, well when you find out which one you really want as your title
Posted by jack wills (Member # 521) on :
I call myself "The King"...now there, that leaves the door wide open for you Alicia...you can be anything you want at Alice's restaurant. So from my small moments in your presence,I can say that you should be a "Professional Commercial Craftsperson".

Alicia, try thinking about who you are and what you do as two separate categories.

Around here, I get referred to as the "detail guy"
Posted by Donald Miner (Member # 6472) on :
Alicia, I would give you this title; Journeyman Signlady. When I started out in 1960, anyone with the credintials you list was a journeyman. Since journeylady just doesn't sound right to me, I'll have to go with the title I just gave you. Jusr my 2 pennies, Love, Peace and Happiness, Don

Journeyperson would be appropriate!

Alicia;
Doesn't matter, "Flo" would right proud of you for what you've accomplished over the years...

We wear many hats all fit neatly under one hat called: Sign Artist, which also says sign painter AND artist, and most of us put our hand to many mediums in our art . . . . but what I REALLY posted on here for . . . is to ask:
Can you, or someone please post a pic of your van that Jeff mentioned?!
Posted by Alicia B. Jennings (Member # 1272) on :
Ya mean the mural on my Toyota PU toneau cover. That's Gene Winfeild in the pic wit me.

There was a time when I said that I was a "Sign Painter" and said it proud, that was enough for me. Now, having seen your work, and having seen you in action,...if you were a guy,....... I would have to say "your the man". But I believe that you are 100% woman, so I'd have to say " your the wo........, wombat? Even being a woman you're still "da man"!
Posted by Anne McDonald (Member # 6842) on :
50?????? Dang, what's your secret!!!!
Wow, that mural is fantastic.
Who needs a label? Do you really need a statement that encompasses what you do? When asked just tell em you do everything exceptionally well!
Then smile your biggest smile!
Posted by Jim Moser (Member # 6526) on :
Like Rick said, who you are and what you do are two different things....What you do can be described by one word....ARTIST ! (and a really good one too!)
As for being 50, I'm not buying that either ! But just remember, reguardless how old you are....Growing older is inevitable...Growing up is optional...and I flat refuse to grow up!
Posted by Dan Kearfott (Member # 3756) on :
Very, Very Impressive!!!! and I like the tanaeu cover too.
Posted by Bevin Finlay (Member # 2159) on :
Right On!!!
That's an excellent mural. The combination of the striping and graphic layout with the mural painting really works well there.
Hope you will continue to post more of your work Alicia... love to see it.
