This was done by a sign shop that has been in business for 40+ years.

Obviously that is a sloping lot that the sign painter cleverly aluded to in his layout. He's a genius.

Nothing beats the beauty of a hand-painted sign.

Area code 225 is a telephone area code that covers part of southern Louisiana.

Russ, don't put down hand painters please. But that guy way two jugs into the wind before he even cut out the top shape on the sign.
Bugs me how he got the border so even in that state.

The sad thing is that the area code should be 252.

Reminds me of what a sign would look like from the "Lenny Chronicles" saga.

Maybe it's the sign shop's property that's for sale, in which case it's obvious *why* the property is for sale.

How much is he paying people so they let him make signs for them?

Yeah, the company has been in business for 40 years, but as a chimney cleaning business.

Good thing it wasn't nice clean legitimate vinly lettering with corrected kerning, proper margins and leading, equal shapes on opposite sides of the theoretical threshold, proper sized letters in the same family, pleasing silhouettes and copy groups, well thought out color scheme and non-conflicting rhythms or someone would have accused the quicky sticky shops!

Don't touch those brushes when you've been hitting the Jack D.

It's actually a great marketing plan. Now instead of a few people driving by every day, he gets free nation-wide advertising due to the outraged sign makers in the area who post it on various forums. Genius!
Obviously there's more vacant land/space on the left side of the block than on the right, where things are a bit cramped or squished. He was trying to convey this in a subtle manner, as well as indicate the slope of the land.
(It's kind of like a cemetery being for sale, where all the plots on the right are used up, but there's plenty of room uphill on the left for more graves, you see)

Maybe this was an employee's last act of defiance before getting fired.

...I don't understand, L and what is for sale!
Posted by Stephen Deveau (Member # 1305) on :
I love it!
There is times, when people with money will think a 'Cheap Sale'.
I have done signs like this because the realtor was asking to much in commission.
Can you guess which sign sold the property!
It is only text and information. Sometimes this style of work does the job for the sale.
Think about it!

Got your attention didn't it? You look and critique this one, but when you see a well executed sign, the comment is, Gee that's nice. Gotta give the person credit, this sign will get more attention than some I have seen. Or could we just say, Dare to be different?

I find this one very puzzling. The quaility of the letter construction is all over the place. The top line, with the exception of the O and the spacing between the N and the E isn't bad at all. Land.... well , the individual letters, actually look pretty good, just three different widths. For Sale and the phone number looks like, with the exception of a couple of numbers, like a raw amatuer did it. The slant ??????? I'm with bushie, somebody was really messed up when they did this and probably stays that way as indicated by the border shape??????

Yea, stuff like that used to drive me crazy when I made a living with a brush.... then I progressed to being disturbed by "letter perfect" cut vinyl that had all upper case brush script squeezed and distorted till it was illegible... now I've advanced to being irritated by digital print nightmares that are illegible made with $25-50K in equipment and they still can't make a sign you can read. Hey at least that one is readable.

All of your remarks, have really cracked me up! It's my FAVORITE pass time, and occupational hazard...SEEING EVERY SIGN IN VIEW...and sizing them up...Its the QUESTIONS that will never be answered that drive ME CRAZY...like, DID someone ACTUALLY PAY for that??? Did someone THINK they did a GREAT JOB on it? WAS the customer pleased with it. DID THE CUSTOMER PROVIDE the ARTWORK???? by email in a .p65 format??? OR Was the subtle coloring, SYMBOLIC? the ABSTRACT shape and USE of negitive space PROOF that THIS signpainter whoever he or she is...WILL be the next BIG THING in the Multi-million dollar ART WORLD??

I've seen that technique used before. It's called forced perspective.
Now that you forced me to look at it, I have a much better perspective of how NOT to make a sign!

Goes to prove that there are two things that you need to do to be a sign writer of that quality.
#1. Drink a lot #2. go with out sex
Sure looks as though he or she qualifies and then some.

I'm with Bill and George. That sign does it's job a lot better than 90% of today's vynil and digital print crap (read wrap) that are totally illegible! The slant attract attention and it is easily readable!
Life is so good!

Hey, I guess the guy saw his sign here, and after all the negative comments, decided to have it redone by the local "Wrap Guru". I took a pic and posted it here:
