Hi everyone, Well I finally used up my stock of 1/4 " sign tape. My suppliers have told me that you can only get the 3/8" tape now (I have a number of rolls of it, but prefer the 1/4 "). Just wondering what the brush swingers out there are using?

I'm assuming you mean what you use to tape the top and bottom of letters. I use Finesse Edge. It works great. You can find them on the merchant page. This stuff comes in a variety of widths.

Yes George, That’s the stuff I'm talking about. I do use the finesse edge tape but find it to be thicker than the sign tape. I know things are changing and suppliers don't see any value in producing what use to be common products for our industry. Just thought I would see what you're all using.

We use the green fine line stuff, (check with Canadian Sign Crafters), that we pick up at our sign supply places but also 3Ms blue tape, which we get at Acklands, it goes right down to 1/8 inch and bend it both directions, great for doing those old style flames...Hope Alls well Rick Pat.

Pat Welter, do you know just from this standpoint, the price difference of Finesse Edge and 3M blue or green fine line is more than double for 3M. Finesse also offers 1/16 inch edge tape and in increments as wide as an inch. Finesse has it all over 3M as far as stretching, precision and cost.

The larger question is . . . do you have used tape peices stuck all around the lettering area for re-use-ablity later . . . .
I know a coupl'a ol' signers who do this . . .
(my two sign teachers always used regular ol' scotch 3-M disappearing tape so I do too . . . watch the package closely. There's usually only 640" on the roll but if you pay attention you can get the ones that say 800" for the same price. It's also quite handy for any gift wrapping need, but I cringe to use it for the mundane . . . lol
I also use 3-M blue 1/8 and 1/4 tape you get at the auto paint supply . . .

For the last few years, I've been using a poly bag sealing tape, that I buy in bulk. It's a whole lot less expensive than the so-called "sign tape" but it works every bit as well. Most places that wholesale poly bags also carry this item which is usually sold to supermarkets to use in their dispensers that seal the poly bags they provide typically in their produce or bakery sections.
Hey George, is the Finesse tape cheaper than regular old Scotch tape? I've been using it for a hunnert years. You just have to make sure not to use the cheapo knock-offs. Many of them will leave the adhesive behind when you go to peel them off.
I guess the only drawback to it is you can't see it very well when it's laid down.

I'm in Dale's camp. As far as using tape for lettering purposes, I've been using Scotch Magic tape for years. Its what my father used for as far as I can remember back when he was handlettering signs and vehicles.

I was taught to use the CHEAPEST brand of clear "scotch type" tape you could put your hands on for lettering. The cheap stuff bends a lot better and makes better curves if you are doing letters. Now if I were making Graphix on a Car the the 1/4 fineline "green" tape is what I use.

Finally I feel at home where money is no object and working with all you Millionaires brings a smile to my face. I too love the blue and green 3M tapes, I love the way they stretch and lose their shape in the corners. For I love to spend double and triple what others in the know use for comparing the quality because I truly know that 3M prices are certainly worth easily earned cash.
