From ZeroNine:
quote: I would like to announce a new substrate of ZeroNine's called Digitel Electroluminescent Material for use on the Gerber EDGE.
Digitel is unique because it illuminates and all you need is a Gerber EDGE printer, our Digitel material, and our Conductive Ribbon. You can make a lighted sign in 5 minutes and it is not very complicated beyond what you all have been doing for years. When you print on the backside of the Digitel material the front side lights up where you printed when powered, it's that simple! We have instructions on our website and will be adding more as the weeks go on.
The advantages are HUGE beyond being able to MAKE ONE. If you are unfamiliar with electroluminescent (EL) technology it has been around for years but it has always been screen printed. There are many layers of specialty coatings just to get it to light up, let alone light up in colors. With all that screen print setup time, you have a special advantage by owning a Gerber EDGE.
Advantages of Digitel Electroluminescent Material in particular are 1. Thinness - No thicker than Static Cling 2. Flexibility - You can roll up your lights in a tube and ship them across the country. 3. Customization - Where you print is where it lights up as long as power can get to it. 4. Die Cutting - A huge advantage to Digitel is that you can cut out with scissors or through cut on your enVision any design and it will still light up. 5. Colors - With ZeroNine offering 60+ colors, you can just add a simple overlay to change it from lighting white to changing it to your desired look. 6. Animation - You can get fun and more eye catching by adding animation. It is easy to do too! 7. Ease of Use - We have been working on this for 5 years and trying to perfect it so that sign makers will enjoy using it. Load the cartridge, print your connected image, attach some wires with some conductive tape, and then flip it over to see it illuminate. You can get tricky but it isn't required. You don't need to be an engineer or an electrician to use it, you just have to be creative. 8. No catastrophic failure - Digitel won't just burn out, instead it dims over time. The more it is on, the faster it dims. This is more advantage for you to add animation because if you make it flash, it can last twice as long. 9. Doesn't heat up - Digitel doesn't heat up and is actually cool to the touch when on. 10. It's fun - You will find out quickly that not only can you make good money using it, you can also have fun and possibly start a new hobby or niche.
Imagine being able to light up a window graphic, address, phone number, hours of operation, a car wrap! It's possible and since you all have Gerber EDGE printers, you can do it when your inkjet competitors can not. Traditionally you have to buy a standard sized panel and you add a square overlay. We are getting into customization and tapping your creativity.
I believe it is the coolest product to come out of a digital printer in the last 10 years. This product has been in development for 5 years and I am happy to finally bring it to you all.
www.zeronine.com - the instruction web page isn't complete but you can see some ideas and the concept. We will be adding more continually over the course of the next several weeks.
Digitel Electroluminescent Material will be available this summer. _________________ Charlie Scheppman

I've never heard of this: can it be used in place of backlit signs? I went on the website but the terminology is out of my league.

I don't think it will come close to back lit signs Deb.
But it will add a new dimension to other things. I can't wait to see it and figure out many uses for it.
