I have a project in the works that requires lettering that looks aged over 50- 60 year old . I have done this several ways but this time I get to work on a surface freshly painted with Rustoleum that can be sanded which opens up a few options. How many techniques have used to create this effect. Maintain AJ

Is it a flat panel sign? cut out letters? how close is gonna be to the public? How big? What colors you using?

Sophisticated Finishes has a zillion different combinations of primers and overcoats.
I am making a 1" thick "steel" plate out of HDU with the finishes. The primer can be stroked on then finished with rust or a green patina or copper or....

Both Pierre and Rene are very good at making painted letters look old... I have the panels on my wall to prove it!
I'm into to 3D stuff more...

Alrighty then.
Go ahead and flat out the area you are working on (brillo pad). Letter it with one shot (or whatever your favorite juice is) then just do a little rubbing with the pad over the lettering/ graphic, and your done.
If you want it to look very realistic. mix ya a bit of the base coat on the car and soften it up a bit and blow it with a touch up gun over the area to create "oxidation".
There are many ways to pull it off, but the way I described is for theme areas. Check out my site and go to the gallery. I "aged" a whole 55 ford. Had to make it look like it was a working truck back in the day. The way I described above is the same way I did the whole truck.

Jake's doing em about same way I do, but try Easy Flow's paint, makes it alot easier, as you know, it dries faster, making "dry" brush much easier, maintain normal strokes and it almost comes out of the brush "weathered"....... Posted by Ray Rheaume (Member # 3794) on :
I just mix the paint with a little clear coat and some flattening paste...let the brush strokes show.
