I just signed up as a 'Resident' and paid your dues.
Now I know one thing! I have a freedom of speech.
Lets be one big happy family! in the sign industry you will say.
But art and graphics come in many forms. and the same with launguage
Sorry if things got out of hand!
But it still helps to see and speak on other sides of things. I believe it is call debating.
My first posting was about Barcodes and their use in our everyday life.
All I asked.. is if anyone could read it.
I got the humour points, and the serious one, and the some that slagged myself for the question.
All graphics are different in our world.
I give my due respect to you both and am not trying to stir the pot into a debate.
But with years of experience I have learnt of different tools of this trade.
Yours Truly. Stephen R Deveau

Freedom of speech does not exist here. Nor does it exist on any other website run by someone else.
Being a resident does not entitle you to any extra benefits as far as being a knob. Being a resident grants you a few benefits not available to non-residents such as the Monthly Prize Draw and and the enrollment package. There is no entitlement here.
I have had some things I posted that I, in retrospect, should have kept to myself deleted. I got over it. I suggest you do the same.
Have a great one!

I understand your point of view.
But as 'Graphic Artists' are we not allowed to voice different ideas over time or Items.
Thumb and Finger fights I am not really into...
but 'New Ideas and Debates' makes a world of difference.
I respect yourself in your Worth and Talent.
and the 'freedom of words' can turn something into good deeds.

What special right do graphic artists receive Stephen? Your exercise in freedom of speech devolved into nothing but bitter words between two people.
Sugar coating it into platitudes doesn't change that.

If you don't like it, Stephen... get out and vote for a different mayor next election.

Oh! What a wonderful life it has to be when everyone has to follow the same Ideas in Life..
And others like myself step in and introduce a 'New One.'
I like your answer..... Jon! As I always hit the return/delete button.
Just to be clear on the subject I posted.
To mister David Wright..
The 'Wright' brothers were told that it will never fly!
But as graphic artists/designers they made it work...
Shame on Me for thinking outside that first Box Kite that flew in the sky.

Stephen, I can well understand why your post has been deleted and I think you can too. a personal attack on someone is not welcome on the board for very long. Nice of you to become a resident after 3500 posts but it doesn't give you the rights you seem to be looking for.
Your record here has been one long list of snipping remarks when you aren't trying to help out fellow letterheads. Why is that, why do you feel the need to have a go at others. just do a search, like I have, to read your past acid comments. Then you might understand why there aren't many people lining up to back you up.
I would like to see you posting more of your work on the portfolio section as that billboard you posted was great to see. I can't imagine it as a pounch pattern. more of your work might be better than more of your words.
I expect you will feel the need to respond to me personally but know that is it nice to be nice rather than nasty.
chill.

Do you all know what the amazing thing is!
Not one of your names are.... Barb or Steve!
This subject was never address to you but... to the 'Mayors' of this sight.
Soo Miles.. I am a very chilled person and the attack was verbal on myself.
And as far as posting pictures .... You might what to look up my history on many images I have placed.
But that OK... as I understand that some people just live in 1-D and not 3-d or even 5-D of this world.

Like Darcy, I'm not buying your argument. If you wanted to send a message to just the Shortreeds why not use email? No offense really, but you really are out there in your comments. Maybe Gavin was on to something.

I'm all for free speech, but there are limits. This is Letterville. We are a Community of Letterheads. It's esential all of us know just what that means.
The main reason, we gather is because we all claim to share a mutual love for the sign business. As Letterheads, we also strive to preserve the best of our past and embrace new technology together.
Barb and I are hosts of this particular meet. Sorry Stephen. It's our house. I'm sure you have house rules you expect people to respect when attending functions at your own home.
We learned many years ago that a Community cannot survive and flourish if they are constantly bickering and debating with each other. Those that attempt to use this forum as a soapbox to attack ot attempt to ridicule others are going to have a tough time.
That includes everyone. Residents, Visitors, Friends, Candians, Americans and Albanians! I even banned my Mom from the website. Just kidding....she changes my diapers.
You are an interesting guy Stephen. Some may even use the word eccentric. Don't let that bother you. In this wacky Community of artists, there are many proud to be eccentric. I march to a different beat myself.
I know you take great pride in your role as a **** disturber. We have a few of these characters already walking the streets of Letterville. Over the years, most have learned to funnel their love of stirring into more constructive posts. If your posts are not helping anyone, it's waste of time and bandwidth.
If anyone has a message that is directed towards an individual, please do not use this Forum. Pickup the phone or use e-mail.
I do have a question. This whole deal started out over some dumb barcode post. To be honest, the whole discussion went right over my feeble head. What really drives me nuts is that I have this feeling you actually have a point. Am I in a Sherman and Peabody cartoon?

Thank you Steve for your answer.
I have always been very opened minded on new ideas.
And yes! I do run in a different direction then most people.
I find it helps others to think a bit more on things.
I did not take offense with any ones comments. Anyone's!....... and never will
As Bruce would say... Who wants Chinese Food.
Watch for my next posting.. it will be in Braille or even Morse Code.
To all that have replied. Thank you for your thoughts. I mean that truly.
One day when your customers asks if you can do their graphics in a different format, say like 'Sign Language' symbols!
Just remember that this industry is not just text related only.
And to clear 'The Air' the code was, "Russian Blue"... a different breed of cat which is very rare.

You Guys crack me up! Happy to see this come to an end without anyone loseing an eye.
The Mayor's comments were "Exactly" my thoughts on the original post..."Am I that dumb?"..Because it did go right over my head.
Glad that you are still here Steve, I too like your off the wall, outside the box comments and Thoughts as well... and you know how Off the wall we Newfies are sometimes.

LOL Doc . . .
y'all now. . .
Stephen . . . I commend you for your sheer 'objectivity'. You have, obviously, an inate ability to see both sides of an issue, and take genuine pleasure in hearing everyone's ideas and input, not for the sake of argument. Understood. But for the exploritory journey. It's just fun. However, you must retain a grip.
As a person who is objectively, like-minded, I must tell you that thru many perils and errors I have made the significant discovery in life that the majority of people will assume a definite side on most any issue with only slight objectivity, and often, not necessarily even relative to the issue, and even when relative, some are indeed completely void of objectivity.
Therefore, the challenge becomes the ability to love and accept all manner of people even when they blow your mind with a seeming reluctance to understand or 'play' with arbitrary ideas.
The real gift of Letterville is actually knowing these people in real life. There's where the fun begins. This site is just a notebook to check in at until there's a meet you can attend.
It's all good.
(even my spelling)

My very first experience with Bar Codes goes back to 1972. That year we got a subcontract to repaint all of DuPont Canada's rail cars which they owned. All of those rail cars had on them, a patch about 12" square on which there were strips of reflective tapes in various lengths and colours. This patch was positioned at a specific height on each rail hopper car, so that a beam of light could be projected onto the car and be "read" by a TV camera. Apparently this reflective Bar Code was the railway's way of keeping track of which train was connected to which car....it's last point of travel, and direction. Essential information for shippers' inquiries.
The point of all this ? Bar Codes are meant to be read by electronic devices, and not the average human eye. Certainly, they are a means of Graphic Communication, and are no doubt extremely useful, but they're somewhat like becoming a Master of Dead Languages. One might know everything there is to know about a dead language, but what practical use is that knowledge if there is no one to converse with
It's a specialized area of knowledge designed to foster efficient communication among machines. Hell, I haven't even mastered the art of communicating with "Voice Mail", but somehow there I'm expected to believe there is an advantage in learning the language of scanners, and optical readers?
I think that I'm having enough just to be able to communicate in the words and images that most of society can recognize and appreciate.

Russian Blue? Like the cat with you in your picture, Stephen? I guess I'm not a literate "bar code reader", but I do know Russian Blues. Is that your pet?
Posted by Stephen Deveau (Member # 1305) on :
Hi Nancie
Yes that is my cat I found out from a friend (Vet) she is a Russian Blue.
Owned and breed by the Zar of Russia. They are know to be shoulder cats. Always jumping on your shoulder.
But as I stated on my other post, the cat has 6 toes on all paws.
She will jump on your shoulder and you never feel the claws because of their balance.
Pure solid Grey colour fur with eyes that change from Amber in the daylight to Steel Blue at night.
You always have to keep a watch out for her under foot at night as they are very well know for their hunting abillities.
I am looking for a tom to breed with her.
