Every now and then i cut computer on, a font is missing. I don't understand it like I don't understand my toolbars in flexi always changing positions, NONETHELESS! Every free font site that used to be free, seems to link to fonts.com.
Ill be damned if im paying $22 for a font. But I have to admire they have been able to link all to their site
I just have to wonder what they are paying these guys to link them to their website. Its on all the normal ones i go to to get my fonts.

I can't believe the nerve of those font designers. It's a total racket they're running. I mean, they think they can spend dozens if not hundreds of hours on a font, and then turn around and sell it for a whopping $22!

I certainly would't argue with those numbers Dave, but I wonder how many type designers are selling 1000 purchased copies. Having spent a lot of time at typophile.com, I get the feeling the money doesn't come that easily for most. Since I plan to start selling fonts soon, I will let you know.
I mainly had to chuckle at Bruce's approach to font buying. He often posts rants about cheap customers not appreciating the value of a job well done, and yet he flatly refuses to pay $22 for a font. Clearly, there are some fonts I wouldn't pay a nickel for, but there are others I've payed a lot more than $22 for. I saw some inconsistancy, and thought I would have a little fun with it.

Spending $22 on a font??? That's about as absurd as being expected to buy legitimate software or to expect to be paid for designing a logo or sign. The audacity.

Wow!!!!! I've been trying to reply to this post, but it's just like banging my head against the wall. I can't imagine how this thinking exists here in this place. We are professionals, not some child trying to fancy up a report for Social Studies. Intellectual property in the form of designs and creativity is our life line. If we need a substrate for a job, we buy it, mark it up and sell it for a profit. If I can use the offcuts for another job, good for me, bonus.Still, you can only use the material one time, then it's gone. If I need a font, I buy it mark it up and sell it. If I can use it for another job, and another job, and another job, good for me. What a bargain!!

does anyone remember the gerber 4b days? $400.00 bucks for a font, thats $1200.00 if you want times roman light, medium and bold. Some people actually had 20 or 30!!!!!!!!!

Yes, Pete, I sure remember. We had at least 25 in our Gerber Sprint System. Now those were tough decisions.

Well, I just can't sit here and hold my toungue, or is it tung? Maybe the fonts are so different that I just don't have the time to mess with such a decision. So, those moments, Gosh I mean Split Seconds That little ol'me spent just goofin' around on a font and trying to make it usable and to have some value as a signpainter style...How dare me and others who forced themselves to spare a minute or two just for the hell of it, thinking how rich we are going to be raking in cash by the thousands from a bunch of sign folks with fat wallets. Well, Scuseuszzzzzzzz Meeeeee! I guess one pi$$ed off person can throw water at me and the font crowd and we will just throw in our lot with FREEEEEEEEEEEEFONTZZZZZZZZ to please everyone. I just talked to Donald Trump, and he feels so bad that he is gonna toss all his cash, stocks, bonds, etal to the streets from high above Manhattan, to please the world too.
All shukin' aside....Make yer own damn fonts!

I know what you mean Jack. BTW I love your fonts. Some of my fonts took over 850 hours to complete, and that is working at night to complete them because I too have a full time sign job.

if you all are done bitching now my post was saying Its seems Im getting liked to fonts ,com and being charged for what used to be free.
Ive gotten all signfonts, and letterheads fonts without raising a brow. Im referring to fonts we use everyday. not specialized ones, I should have mentioned that, I apologize.
im sure alot of time goes into these fonts and people need to be compensated on that. if I wrote post wrong please excuse me

I understood what you were saying Bruce-- I buy good fonts, but I'm not too keen on typing a search for a specific free font, only to be sent to Fonts.com and asked to pay for something that you can "legitimately" get for free.
In answer to your question: I don't know how they have figured out how to link to just about every site-- maybe a hi-tech version of Google Adwords or something.
Several years ago I bought the Letraset Type on Demand Library-- All of the foundry fonts were on a CD, you had to pay to unlock some and some of them were unlocked as part of the package. A few years back, they stopped supporting it and now I have a worthless investment, with fonts that I purchased and now can't access.

Since I'm pretty sure I've been selling fonts for us sign guys longer than anybody out there, then I must be the richest of all the font designers out there. Guess I'll just go ahead and sell my sign shop, my '79 ford pickup and my 13-year-old lawnmower and retire next week! And I want all you other font designers to pledge you'll do the same! Time to quit sitting on that wad o' cash we've made and start living a little!
seriously tho--I spend about 40 hours on a font before it considered finished, so there is a lot more going on here than most people realize. And after all that work, there are days when the Fontry is very good to me. Then there are days (read: months) that I hesitate to call myself a professional font guy! But for those who have bought my fonts, and also legitimately purchased fonts from other designers, you are much-appreciated.

oh yeh -- as was mentioned above, the best way to pay for fonts? Mark it up to the customers when you can!!! Just like anything else you buy!!!

It only was free because the free sites were infringing and had not yet been been found and threatened with legal action. Fonts.com is owned by Agfa-Monotype, who is one of the world's largest developers and providers of commercial type.

I think you're right Fred. They probably made a deal with the sites that list fonts: either direct queries for non-free fonts to fonts.com or get sued.

I didn't mean to come across saying font designers are getting rich. I know better. I was simply responding to Russ' tongue in cheek comment about charging $22 for a font, like they spend all those hours building a font to sell one copy at $22.
I have a lot of respect for you font designers. I've had it with the free fonts and have been building my library. In fact I just spent $377.00 on a bunch of fonts just last week.
