Our program has suddenly stopped loading new fonts. The fonts appear in the font folder but do not show up in Corel. Any suggestions as to what may be going on?

Two questions:
1. How many fonts do you have loaded in your computer.
2. Did you install them thru Control panel, or just drag & drop them into the font folder.

There are 1308 fonts in the font folder. There are 898 fonts in Corel. When the fonts were downloaded they came in a zip folder and then was asked where to put them. The folder was put directly in the font folder and extracted the files from the zip and drug into the font folder. Approximately 10 of the new fonts showed up in Corel yesterday but are now gone. 18 of the new fonts (of approximately 100 downloaded) show up in Adobe.

AHA! they are not installed....just sitting there.
Go to Start, Control Panel, Fonts, Filer, Install New Font, then go to the folder that contains the new fonts. Select all the fonts that you want and click OK.
That will install them properly and you will be able to use them in Corel.

I believe Si is correct, they did not get installed. The method he suggested will ensure that Windows actually installs the fonts.
Barb, one thing to keep in mind is that overloading your font folder will cause your system to slow down and sometimes cause flaky problems as well... 500-600 fonts is pushing the limit, over 1,000 is just asking for trouble.
Doing some font folder housecleaning might help prevent some headaches, and also make your computer boot faster.
One thing I might add, I don't know what OS you are running, but on Windows 98 and ME there used to be a limit to how many fonts you could install. They'd still show up in the Windows Font Folder, but they wouldn't actually 'Install' and would never show up in your programs. XP doesn't have that limit.

Okay, the computer that is overloaded with all the fonts the option under file "install new font" option doesn't even come up. Maybe it is so overloaded with fonts it can't accept anymore?
Also, when we try and delete fonts the majority of them say "cannot delete. Make sure the disk is not full or write-protected and that the file is not currently in use".

Which version of Windows are you using?
WIN98 has a limit of 1000 fonts.

The truth of the matter is, Windows 98 does not "reach its limit" according to the number of installed fonts at all... it has to do with the length of the font names and their filenames. Furthermore, if a font resides in a location other than the FONTS folder or the SYSTEM folder, the entire path to the font has to be stored in the registry, reducing the number of fonts you may install.
To further compound the problem, Windows 95/98/Me does not tell you when you have reached the limit of installed fonts and it will continue to let you think you are adding fonts to your system when in fact, you are not. Let me explain....
Once you reach that mysterious limit of fonts in Windows, you (or a program installation) can keep adding fonts to the Windows FONTS folder. The fonts will appear to be installed because they are in the folder, but they may not appear in the font menu of your programs. The fonts are unusable because you have reached your system's limit. When this occurs, you will find that as you delete fonts, the number of installed fonts that is indicated in the Status bar when viewing the Windows FONTS folder, does not change. This is because as you delete fonts, those extra, unusable fonts are moving up and becoming usable again. When you finally see this number in the status bar actually begin to decrease, you know you are making progress.

I can't belive that I'm going to say this, and I am gonna catch heck for it...
Anyone want to have a contest to see how many fonts they have loaded? I'm a font junkie, and I cant seem to stop...4692 fonts
My system runs fine (much better than my last system). Now before anyone says it, I know I don't need that many, but I have a bunch that I like to use, and I do work for a couple of other companies, and they have their own font choices, so its easier to just have them loaded, than to have to keep asking them to convert to curves and resend.

Thanks! That makes sense...but, how do I get around the problem I mentioned earlier that it won't let me delete the fonts we don't want?....."when we try and delete fonts the majority of them say "cannot delete. Barb, I'd reboot the computer and try to delete them before I start any other programs at all. Apparently something is running in the background that is using some of the fonts.
By the way, what version of Windows are you running? It would help to know that.
Mark, you are correct, in XP you can have unlimited fonts... about the only drawback is it make your computer boot slower and programs load slower.
One is that they are write protected. Right-click on the font and select PROPERTIES. If READ ONLY is checked, uncheck it.
The other is if you have used a program and it has loaded the fonts, they may be "in use" and not accessible.
You may want to start in SAFE MODE (Press F3 when rebooting) and delete them there.

There must be something wrong with me. I have around 140 installed in Corel and could probably live with one fourth of those. Too many choices wastes an awful lot of time.

You don't want to delete system fonts also are you logged in as the system administrator?
You could google a list of WinXP system fonts so you don't remove the wrong ones.
It is still possible Windows fonts cache file is corrupt. Delete the font cache file: C:\WINDOWS\system32\FNTCACHE.DAT and reboot Windows so it can regenerate it.

I have been using this for many years and it still works well in WindowsXP, no problems.
Try it. It may work, but even if it doesn't in this case, it' a very nice easy program for dealing with fonts and viewing and "trolling" through the fonts you have.

Wanted to let you all know I signed on as System Administrator as suggested and have been able to delete fonts. Some are still blocked - which they must be the system fonts. But slowly, surely am weeding them out. After looking at the work "Font" hundreds of times they all start to look alike.. Thanks for all the help!
