So I just got done carving a 2ft x 4ft double sided 2" thick HDU sign.. the carving is only 1/2 to 5/8 deep
I primed both sides then painted both sides equal coats each side.. I set it outside flat on a table this afternoon to work on it some more.. to paint the carved letters..
I came inside to eat lunch and I go back outside about an hour later.. Its only 82 in the sun and the HDU has a 3" bow to it the 4ft way and about 1 1/2 bow the 2ft way.. what do I do now???? [I Don t Know] [Bash] [I Don t Know] [Bash]

Don't worry. Its happened to me before.

just take it inside and place it on a flat surface face down. Place enough weights on the panel so that it will flatten out. Let sit overnight. That should take care of the problem.

In the future, I'd recommend not letting the panels dry in direct sunlight. Just because the air temp is only 82f doesn't mean that the surface temp isn't much higher. I'd be surprised if your panel didn't reach 120f or higher while in direct sunlight.

Jason,

Glenn's approach is a good one, but if you have residual curvature, you can try to sun bake the backside and see if the sign straightens out.

The paint shrinks when it cures up. The sunny side got more heat and cured faster. Shrinkage of a thin film can create an amazing amount of stress.

[Eek!] Wow, I've never seen that much distortion on such a short piece of 2" thick material.
What brand/density? What kind of paint?
