So... what's everyone into these days?

I have lost 10 lbs in the last month!

(april fools, no I haven't)

I'm losing something but not sure what. I bought a bunch of new clothes about a month ago and they're all big on me now (figures, haven't bought new stuff in over a year) and the scale isn't fluctuating, so I guess from working out my shape is shifting. Cutting out more carbs too and it takes awhile for the body to recognize that fact.

I'm currently going to the gym tues and thurs when cody is in swimming. It's a rather quick workout, treadmill, some other thing that looks like you're skiing and then weight resistance stuff all within 1 hour but it's something! Doing the occasional 10 km walks on sporatic weekends. May do my mountain walk today as cody is with his dad.

Am going to try to up the aerobics as it's the legs/hips I need work on more than anything.

And the bike has been dusted off and is once again on the road! Cody and I bike to school whenever weather permits.

How are you all doing?

Alright Donna! Good start on April's Health Club updates!

Not much to report since I added to March's update post just yesterday. I did do a Zumba class since then though! [Smile]

Today I'm going to help my mental health by cleaning off my desk, and diving into some much overdue paperwork. I know I'll feel better if I do that. I would like to get a jump start on some of next week's scheduled work too, if I can fit it in.

Seems like there is always something to catch up on around here!

This months goal:

Everybody play along!!! [Razz]

This month:

1. CUT OUT AS MUCH RED MEAT AS POSSIBLE THIS MONTH
Eat more chicken, salmon, shrimp, fish, tuna, bison

( Give McDonalds and all the other fast food restaurants a vacation this month )

2. Start cutting way back on bacon

3. Start eating salads with chicken
use more vinegar instead of the other dressings

4. Keep a large amount of apples, bananas, carrots oranges, cherry tomatoes and grapes handy to munch on through the day, celery too!

5. Eat a large bowl of Quick Quaker Oats at least every other day. Its easy to make. Use Bananas instead of sugar to sweeten ( cause it tastes like cardboard...yuck

6. Cut out all soft drinks, and if you eat out switch to raspberry tea or just ask for water with a lemon slice.

7. Cut back on sugar as much as you can. Seems sugar intake makes you want to eat more.

8. Drink at least 6 bottles of water daily

9. Take your Vitamins daily and if you dont know what to take, then get a bottle of One-A-Day for men or women. Veema is a great program, and so are others.

Niacin will help you stay alert in the afternoons so you wont be getting drowsy. Just FYI.

10. Exercise. Just get out and walk for 20 minutes everyday if nothing else.

This is my goal for the month and I challenge you to try to keep up! [Smile]

well Dave thats what I've been eating ever since I can remember. I also pride myself on never being to a McDonalds no less eating at one.

In reality I'm a juicer and never drink soda pop or any bottled juice because of the high frucrose corn syrup, same goes for the tea drinks and the 100% juices. Fresh is the answer for me.

Even in juicing, there is a right way and a wrong way. a slow reciprecating juicer or auger is better then any fast juicer because it doesn't heat up the fruits or veggies which destroys its vitamin and mineral content. Bottled water isn't any better then home water in most cases and a decent water filter could make all the difference in the world.

Eat organic, right down to your oatmeal [Smile]

It's carbs that make me tired in the afternoon. (which in fact turns to sugar in the body) If I starve myself of carbs for awhile, I get my energy back.

Hard to gauge right now with this stubborn cold hitting me hard. Will attempt a short walk for some extra energy. Laying down isn't helping anyway.

Am now hiding the white freshly baked buns from the deli, will put them in the freezer so I can't see them any longer. LOL

...Are there any VEGETARIANS in the health club? Or on Lville?
When I quit meat (and most dairy) I lost all of my excess weight.
With all of the health, environmental and moral issues associated w. eating animals, are there many of you who have decided NOT to?

Posted by Donna in BC (Member # 130) on :

My brother is a true blue vegitarian and he dropped all excess weight without effort, stays off fats and sugars and caffine and he's never felt better. Then again he's one to grab a handful of nuts instead of joining in on a turkey dinner. I guess I just don't want it bad enough. LOL

If I didn't have a picky 7 yr old eating with me, I'd probably give it more effort in that direction. I just refuse to cook two meals and Cody needs ALOT of protein to keep him going. My day will come...

Hi Bill,

I was a vegetarian for 7 years when I was in my late teens, early 20's.

Today, I do eat meat, in moderation. I eat just about everything, .... again, in moderation. This seems to suit me better than a vegetarian lifestyle.

The things I don't indulge alot in are sugar, sodium, processed, fast, and fried foods. I've never been a pop drinker so that's never even been a temptation.

If I were to choose one "food group" to completely give up, it would probably have to be sweets rather than meat. I'm convinced that sugar is just plain evil! hahhaaaa

I try to keep my eating fresh and natural. Lots of salads with very little or no dressing.

Dave,

No, I challenge YOU to keep up! [Smile]

1. Just gonna cut back on red meat? Hah! Cut it out COMPLETELY! I don't have any problems with red meat, I just found after eating more chicken, fish, etc. that I just don't even like red meat anymore!

2. Bacon? BACON??? Come on! If you're gonna commit, do it all the way! [Smile]

3. Good job. Now eat salad at 3 meals a day and you're on to something.

4. The veggies are good to have but don't go too overboard on the fruits. If weightloss is a goal, 2 or 3 servings of fruit each day is good, but no mindless fruit-munching! And when you do eat fruit, combine it with a protein source like yogurt to slow down the digestion of the fructose sugar in the fruit, otherwise you'll just get hungry again shortly after eating it.

5. Aww come on, eat oats twice a day every day. A chopped apple and cinnamon is perfect for flavoring. Just one note, when you do eat oats, even though it has fiber which slows down digestion to avoid insulin spikes, eat some protein with it, like eggs, eggwhites, turkey breakfast sausage or even grilled chicken breast.

6. Not bad, but I only drink water. Try to keep up! hehehe...

7. Yep, sugar spikes insulin which drives blood sugar down too far, which makes you want to eat more in order to bring blood sugar back up. It's not just sugar though, EVERY carbohydrate source out there has this affect on your body, some more than others. This is why I said when you eat oats and fruits, always combine them with protein sources because proteins, especially animal protein, will slow the digestion of those carbohydrates. If you combine carbs and proteins like this you can ignore the Glycemic Index of those foods, it's only when you eat them by themselves that the GI has an affect.

8. How big are your bottles? Mine are 1 Gallon and I drink a minimum of one per day. Hehehe. I use reverse osmosis water though, not bottled.

9. Vits are good..

10. Well, you know my exercise routine and you used your age as an excuse not to try it. Hahaha!

Yesterday I didn't do any exercise and it was the pits. I thought some rest would be nice but turns out, I was just cranky all day long and I had a hard time falling asleep. I went to a BBQ, came home about 10pm, watched some TV, felt sleepy but when I laid down I remember looking at the clock at 3am.. ugh. I'm out of 5-HTP (tryptophan in a pill form, awesome for mellowing out and sleeping) otherwise I'da been popping one.

Did you know:

Plants (our fruits & vegetables) can manufacture vitamins, but they cannot manufacture minerals?

The human body needs over 60 minerals for good health?

Farmers add 7 minerals to farmland because that's all plants need to give high yield?

Minerals have been depleated from our soil in the US since the 1930's?

When they cut carbs (not eliminate) and fortify minerals in lab rats & mice that scientists have tripled their lifespan?

Most major diseases in animals have been eliminated by fortifying their food with minerals, including Alzimers, diabetes, heart disease, stroke, well the list is long.

We all need to add the full spectrum of minerals to our diet. I have. Haven't had a cold or flu since I started over 3 years ago. You need the liquid kind by the way. Powdered minerals in pill form are useless.

Alright, I give up,....what's a Zumba class? (dance?)

Worked like a dog this weekend (which was a workout in itself), and did 12 miles on the bike today.

A new bike is on order, and should be arriving in a couple of days (just in time for some wet snow in the forcast) yea!

That heavy steel framed bike is gonna be parked until next winter. ha ha

Just move,
Bob

And Dave did you know that the inupiat peoples of the arctic north commonly live to be over 100 years old because of drinking water that flows from glaciers? Glaciers grind minerals into facial quality powder. Time to belly up to the glacier bar, huh? [Smile]

Substitute Maple Syrup for sugar, honey or any other kind of sweetener. Did you know the Maple syrup contains calcium (more than milk), potassium (more than bananas), manganese, magnesium, phosphorous, and iron.

It contains trace amounts of vitamins B2, B5, B6, riboflavin, biotin and folic acid along with many amino acids and phenolic compounds that give its unique colour and flavor.

Posted by Mike Pipes (Member # 1573) on :

Plus Maple Syrup just plain ol tastes GOOD!

Well, last week in the March thread I made a comment about my personal deadlifting record.

I beat it again today. [Smile] Last Friday it was 305 and today... (drumroll please...).... 315!

Dave, did you know that every few years, we actually have a completely brand new physical body? Our body is constantly regenerating itself, some parts regenerate every few months while others take a few years, and the only reason that people with chronic disease/health problems live with those diseases forever is because they manifest them with their own minds. Instead of focusing on living healthy and happily, they focus on their aches, pains, sicknesses, etc and complain about them incessantly, therefore they're actually willing themselves into perpetual sickness.

I don't get colds or flu simply because I've made the conscious decision not to, don't have the time for it, and it's been so long since I've had either I certainly can not remember it. It's gotta be at least 15 years. I have had cellulitis a few times, still tryin to figure out how to make that go away. [Smile]

I didn't see it in the March thread, but congrats Mike on the deadlift personal record. Being a competitive powerlifter (bench press & deadlift), I know how good it feels to keep breaking your own records.

Posted by Mike Pipes (Member # 1573) on :

Thanks Mike... so you know how my back is feeling right about now too. [Smile] My bench is pathetic but I'm working on it, my back and legs are my main focus though, everyone else neglects them.

Glacier water is sometimes called milk of the mountains. It is so full of minerals that the water has a whitish look to it. People that live in areas where the glacier water gets into their crops are some of the longest lived people in the world.

Oh yeah Mike, I know how your back feels. After a competition I am sore for a week. You are right, a lot of people neglect back and legs, probably because they are the two toughest workouts.

Hoo-Wah!! Got my deadlift up to 325 on Friday, and didn't get sore afterwards this time.. looks like conditioning has set in.

I went to Tucson over the Easter weekend to visit my sister and ate way too much chocolate. [Smile]

Luckily, there are no more holidays until Halloween, at least those that include specially made candies which are my weakness, so now the temptations are gone and I can get back on my hardcore plan.

I still have the remnants of the chest crud, but feeling much better than I did. My voice is almost fully back now too. [Smile]

I'm skipping Swing tonight to do some much needed paperwork, and to catch up on some straggler jobs.

I've been in reorganization mode again here lately. Feels good to purge some clutter, and revamp some closet space. Spring cleaning I guess.

Anything to help make your life run more smoothly, and to lessen stress is good for the health! Seems to lighten my mental load.

Dave Sherby, I would like to know more about liquid minerals. What brand of it to you get, and what should I look for? I googled it and many sites regarding it came up. It's quite overwhelming.

I would like to pick Joey's brain about the PH balance thing he brought up a couple months ago too.

I desire some healthy easy breakfast, lunch and dinner ideas folks!

Please share your favs! I'm feeling pudgy with tshirt weather here... bah...

Another question. Although I detest machines, I need something to keep the aerobic status up when I don't have time for outdoor walks or working out in town. Treadmill or stationery bike?? I don't have room for either form of torture otherwise I'd just get both and be done with it. [Smile]

Donna,
Total Gym. Its all you need. (and you don't have get the more expensive models

Posted by Mike Pipes (Member # 1573) on :

Donna, if you have $1300 I'd recommend a VersaClimber. They stand vertical and don't take up much room, and they're about the most brutal stationary aerobic workout you're gonna find. Period.

If you can't swing that, I recommend an elliptical trainer over a bike or treadmill. They feel easier than both but it's a false sense [Smile] They give you a better workout, and no impact on the joints either.

I like eating egg whites cooked with turkey breakfast sausage mixed in. It's even better topped with some cheese and rolled up in a flour tortilla.

For lunch I usually have some kind of grilled meat, one steamed veggie, and either brown rice or a sweet potato.

Dinner is usually meat and salad of some sort. Tonight is poached halibut and I'm not yet sure what else I'll have.

Posted by Donna in BC (Member # 130) on :

Dave, I desire more than just weight resistant stuff. Isn't that what a total gym is for? But I'd like that too!

Elliptical trainer, I think that's the thing I like using best when working out, sort of like weightless running. Very easy on joints. Just curious Mike, how long can you go on that thing and at what level? And thanks for the info on food. You make anything sound delicious.

What am I doing writing on this post??

I'm one of those omnivorous carnivors that has a non-regenerating body.

I get a lot less exercise than I should, probably about 92% less.

I'm currently, STILL, recovering from a 6km hike I took my kids on while camping at Golden Ears Provincial Park on Easter weekend.

I have the flatest feet in the world and amazingly enough I wasn't in too much pain. But when we got to the main attraction, an amazing water fall with spring run off, I had to take off my boots. ( my 5th pair of the same boot since '92) and dipped them in the water( the feet not the boots)..Whoa! refreshing and painfully cold! the kids did it too ..thought it was funny. MAde the walk back just a bit easier.

Well since my normal exercise regime is ...nothing, I was ready to amputate my lower legs on tuesday..still limping on thursday.

Another Friday and another deadlift increase - 335lbs! hoo-wah!

Donna, on the elliptical it really depends what my goal is. When I do high intensity intervals, I do a 5 minute warm-up, 10 minutes of intervals that are 30 seconds long with 30 second "break" between them, and a 5 minute cool down. The high intensity parts are done at level 17, as fast as I can go, and for reference my heart rate gets up to about 180bpm. The "breaks" are done at level 12. When I'm done with the intervals I follow up with another 20 minutes of steady pace cardio at level 9, and my heart rate will be about 125bpm during that. The intervals help increase performance in times of high demand, say like sprinting in a foot race or more likely for me, chasing down and passing cyclists who think they're fast, while I'm inline skating. [Smile]

Then there are times I hold the same pace for an hour, level 14, heartrate between 150 and 160bpm (80-85%). This is to build endurance in aerobic activity.

The interval and endurance training sessions actually help improve each other too.

If I try to do low intensity, keeping heart rate around 125 (65%) that's level 9 for me at a comfortable pace/RPM I could go for hours on end. I'd simply quit out of boredom far before tiring myself out at that pace [Smile] but I try to limit these sessions to 60 minutes. Beyond that, they just don't hold any benefits - they're not contributing to aerobic endurance, nor peak performance, the body stops using fat for fuel after 45-60 minutes, and the slow pace is boring. In fact, I rarely ever do these types of sessions on gym equipment, I prefer walking outside in the desert or hiking through the rock/mountain terrain here because the weather and scenery is so enjoyable.

Not that I've done anything about it or anything.

Jake, nothing wrong with that steak!! Eating a pound of it in one sitting probably isn't the best idea but anything in moderation is fine.

Back when I was a serious fat burning machine, dropping 3lbs a week for months on end, I ate steak (tri tip, actually) 5-7 times a week. I was just eating 4-6oz at a time though.

Now I'm not all that fond of beef anymore, probably burned out. [Smile]

Did 25 miles on the bicycle yesterday, and did that feel great!

Lots of songbirds singing, Robins gathering worms and nesting materials, the last bit of snow on the sides of the road, views of snow in the mountains in the Adirondack's of New York in front of me and the Green mountains of Vermont behind me. Some warm dry air, the smell of the pine groves as you fly by, no traffic, and some big hills to fly down! Exhilarating!

After 2 straight weeks of dreary depressing weather, it was nice to see the sunshine. I honestly think that is the first time the sun shone (is that correct?) in 16 days.

It's amazing how good a little sunshine can make you feel.

I plan on 50 more miles over the weekend. The weekend weather looks great!

All right Janette, you should be feeling better by now,....you around?

So what's going on out there?

Just move,
Bob

Had a productive weekend.

17 miles on Thursday
35 miles on Friday
21 miles on Sunday

Knocked 11 minutes off of my 20 mile time since this time last year.

Topped 42 mph twice down a couple of decent hills.

Too much to do in this life, too much to see.

Breathe in, breathe out. Just move.

Hey Mike, believe me I'm visualizing the best I can. Still coughing some tho. It'll get better ...eventually. (i hope)

Bob, that's some great riding! Woohoo! [Smile]

Donna, I've been weening myself off the sugar wagon since the holidays. hahahaa I have a new indulgence tho. Lindt has a couple chocolate bars that I just love. Chocolate Truffle, and Lemon Tart. If you see them, give them a try. Awesome! [Smile]

The big difference so far for me this week is that, now it really hurts to cough. hahaaa

Friday eve. I did a 5 mile walk. Sat. morning I did my weight class for the first time in over a month. My muscles are really talking to me today. (the reason it hurts to cough now) I also followed up that class with a zumba class.

Saturday night Mike O'Neill (who is down here vacationing from Labrador) met up with me and my friends and we took in some blues at the Ringside. (a blues joint in my neighbourhood)

Sunday, we went to Myakka State Park (along Myakka river) down in Sarasota, and did some biking and hiking. I rode only 6.5 miles, but we did some leisurely hiking in the woods a couple miles too. It was a nice time. We saw a whole herd of wild boar, a white owl, and a bunch of vultures hanging out. We also saw lots of aligators lounging about.

Busy weekend. I never did get my lawn mowed either. [Frown]

Today, it's back to work!

Almost lifted a 200lb preacher curl today... I was able to get it up off the rack then stalled halfway through the movement. Will try again next Monday. Gotta say though, 185 (my previous high point) was much easier this morning than it was last time.

Also thanks to the assisted pull-up/dip machine, I was able to do a pull-up with 190lbs of my bodyweight. I'm pretty stoked about that but the day I can lift the full 250lbs I'll be bouncing off the walls.

I wanted to wind April's Health Post down on a good note.

I'M BACK!!!!!

Can't tell you how great it is to have my energy levels up again. Although I was plugging along still keeping exercise in the picture, I was doing it feeling quite fatiqued, and with limited enthusiasm.

Boy, you really appreciate feeling good again, when something takes you off course like that.

Mike, I have no idea what a preacher curl is. hahaaa I do hope you are striving to become the incredible hunk, and not the incredible hulk tho. [Smile]

I'm still wanting to know more about liquid minerals, if anyone (Dave Sherby?) whose involved in them would want to spill some details. Also, that whole ph balance thing interests me. I think Joey touched upon that.

I'll do a goggle on them, but I do like to get info first hand from people who are including stuff like this in their own lives.

A neighbour gave me some juice the other day with this stuff called "Green Vibrance" in it. We just call it "pond scum". hahaha It was surprisingly good. I may invest in some of it.
It's ingredients included a whole slew of goodies including Spirulina, Chlorella and several grass, fruit and veggie juices.

Joey, I'm bringing the juicer out again too. Gonna start juicing up some fresh nutrition.

All smiles,
~nettie

nettie,

I described the preacher curl in another post, it may have been March's thread.

It's a bicep curl that you do in a seated position on a bench or machine designed for this one exercise. There's a pad that you lean your chest against, and on the opposite side of that pad is another one that you rest your arms on, then you grab the bar with an underhand grip and curl the weight up. If you've ever done resistance training in a gym using weight machines instead of freeweights, you've probably done them before and didn't realize it. [Smile] My gym has a bench for it so I load up a barbell and go to town. This variation of the bicep curl isolates the biceps more than other bicep exercises like standing barbell or dumbell curls.

Whooooaaaaaaaa... nettie! [Smile]

That's using both arms at the same time, not just one! Although that would be pretty cool! [Smile]

Yeah that's a lot of work for biceps but I figure while I'm losing weight, I'll work on my upper body strength, then when the two meet somewhere along the way, I'll be able to do a chin-up without the assisted machine. [Smile]
