I would appreciate help from those of you who do boats. I have a client who wants some signs on aluminum panels to bolt to the side of his tour boat only during the Summer. He has had some trouble in the past with such panels scratching the paint on his boats, because of vibration of the engine. He was wondering about sticking some kind of foam to the back, between panel and boat, or maybe some kind of foam "washers", to prevent the scratching.
Have any of you heard of something like this, or know of any thing that would work?

Why aluminum? Why not pvc or HDU? Anything will scratch paint given enough time. Maybe the solution here would be to space the panel away from the structure using short rubber spacers (faucet washers make wonderful spacers!) so that nothing contacts the boat.

They have always wanted white aluminum for their white aluminum catamarans. I think the washer idea would work well though. It wouldn't allow so much space that the wind would be a problem.

He's got you chasing your tail. You can't stop the vibrations on a boat, so no matter what material you use there will be vibration. Rubber will deteriorate under constant vibration. If something touches the paint, panel or washer, you will have a scuff on the paint. If he's worried about the panel scratching his paint, what does he do about dock chaffing? Boats are not maintance free. Don't get caught up in meeting impossible expectations here!!!

I'd try a rubber membrane like that used in roofing, it's self ahesive. Then make sure the sign is fastened tight and well. Things acn chafe only if they're loose.
